SAS Places in CNY Build'em & Bust'em Competition at MOST Museum!

On Saturday, November 14th, six of SAS's Robotics Team members went to the MOST Museum with Mr. Zengin and Mr. Altin to compete in the CNY Build'em & Bust'em Competition. There were 99 teams in attendance and both SAS teams placed in the competition!

Staff Sergeant Eric Navarro from the United States Air Force visited Middle School

On Thursday, November 12th, 2015, the middle school was visited by Staff Sergeant Eric Navarro from the United States Air Force. He came to our building to speak on a variety of subjects. He began the presentation with some details about his life and what led him to the military. As time went on, Sergeant Navarro went on to describe what it is to serve in our nation's military. Concepts of duty, service and sacrifice were introduced to our students in this event. After his presentation, our students amazed our guest with a variety of amazing questions about his experiences in both the Army and the Air Force. We thank Mr. Navarro for his time serving our country. He exemplifies the best qualities that ATOMS work to develop!

Middle school students took an adventure with Google Expeditions

On Monday, November 9th, 2015, SAS middle school students took an adventure of massive proportions. They visited amazing areas such as the Great Barrier Reef and ancient Greece today all without leaving their classrooms. They used virtual field trip simulation technology, called Google Expeditions, that is currently being piloted by Google across the country. Expeditions use Google Cardboard viewfinders and cellphones, connected to the Expeditions app, and are controlled by a teacher using a tablet. They feature 360-degree views including photos, 3D images, and video.  Each grade marveled at the experience as they traveled to many of the areas that are details in our curriculum. This was an amazing experience were cutting edge technology magnifies the excellence routinely experience in our classrooms.

First Marking Period Award Ceremony at Middle School

On Friday, November 6th, 2015 the SAS Middle School held its very first quarterly award ceremony for the 2015 school year. Students were recognized for a variety of accomplishments. Setting the tone for each grade level, Best Citizen and Best Academic were presented. High Honor and Honor Roll students were celebrated for their academic achievements. Core subject teachers presented the Student of the Month awards for their respective homerooms. In addition, special area teachers presented their first "Special Area Student of the Month" awards to each grade level. Not to be outdone, Mr. McGriff presented the Athlete of the Month award for the student that displayed excellence both on and off the court. The amazing day was also shared with approximately 30 SAS family members who were able to attend and share in their students accomplishments and recognition.

Manufacturing Careers Day at Lockheed Martin!

Some of SAS high school students visited Lockheed Martin to attend Manufacturing Careers Day. Students were able to see the work that manufacturers do on a daily basis and learned how important manufacturing is to the local, national, and global economy. Students had a wonderful time and we are excited to be invited to this valuable learning experience again next year! 

 

 

Lady Atoms Play in Charity Tournament!

On Saturday, November 7th, the Lady Atoms played in the Marsh Madness Charity Tournament to benefit former Corcoran Cougars Coach, Jim Marsha, who is battling Cancer. There were 32 teams in attendance and it was a single game elimination tournament. The Lady Atoms defeated CBA in the first game and lost to CNS in the second round of play. Money raised from the event went to treatment costs and travel expenses to and from NYC for the former Coach, raising over $10,000! Imani Watts participated in the 3 point contest for the Lady Atoms and did very well. We are very proud of our girls for playing their hearts out for such a wonderful cause!

High School Academic Awards for Quarter 1

On Friday, November 6th, the high school recognized students for their academic success during the first quarter by achieving Honor Roll or Dean's List. Students were also recognized for Outstanding Achievement for guitar, piano, and band as well as students that participated in the SUNY Oswego Summer Research Program. 

Congratulations to all of our students that were honored. We are very proud of your accomplishments!

Ms. Brandi Williams visited 7th grade ELA classes to present Writing Our Lives Annual Conference

On Friday, October 30th, 2015, Ms. Brandi Williams visited our 7th grade ELA classes. She is a doctoral student at Syracuse University and a parent of a SASCS elementary student. She is coming to speak to our middle school students about a FREE youth writing conference that is being hosted by "Writing Our Lives" on Saturday November 7, 2015 from 9am-1pm at Danforth Middle School. 

Writing Our Lives is an annual conference that brings together community members, Syracuse University affiliates and employees, as well as students to facilitate multimodal writing workshops for youth ages 12-18. The annual writing centered conference is free for all registered youth and includes 2 hour workshops such as comic book creation, spoken word poetry, autobiographical writing, fiction writing, poetry and much more! Registration includes a light breakfast, lunch, participation in workshops, all materials included, and a chance for students to share their work! The first 25 students also receive a free t-shirt!

Middle School Fall Dance was a blast

On Thursday, October 29th, 2015, the Student Leadership Club at the middle school hosted a Fall dance. They worked together with the Art Club to design and make decorations. Staff and parents were present to help monitor the dance and serve food. The Student Leaders raised money for future events. Students from all middle school grades attended and had a blast!
