On Tuesday October 10th, 2017, SAS Kindergarteners in Room K-A, with their teachers Mrs. Garza and Mr. Skemaker, talk about the importance of kindness with Mr. Alamin Muhammad, founder of We Rise Above the Streets Recovery Outreach, Inc., a nonprofit organization serving the homeless in Syracuse. Fall Book Fair Delivers Great Books and Higher Goals

Brimming with books for students and their families to share, the fall Scholastic Book Fair at SAS Elementary School included various genres, engaging content and more—all geared toward a range of primary ages. Excitement grew and imaginations soared as students looked for new books for themselves and their families. Through the extreme generosity of parents, grandparents and siblings in our SAS community, the school was fortunate enough to go way above and beyond our sale goal of $1,000. The total reached well over $3,000!  This success would not have been possible without the help of volunteers who donated hours of their own time. Thank you to all who participated and helped to make the fall Scholastic Book Fair a great success!

Students Working Together to Prevent Bullying

As part of our school-wide initiative to raise awareness of bullying, we recently held an Olweus Bullying Prevention Program—and it was a huge success! Students were engaged in a variety of activities, such as creating anti-bullying posters to hang up throughout the school and signing our Olweus school pledge, which is now hanging in the school hallway. A variety of team-building activities took place using our wonderful new playground, a bounce house and parachute. Students also worked on a T-shirt design and got their faces painted.

SUNY-ESF Campus Visit

On Tuesday, Sep 26th 2017, Syracuse Academy of Science High School (SASCS-HS) students visited SUNY-ESF. The trip was coordinated by the outreach program and hosted by Dr. Richard Beal, Jacob O'Connell and Maura H. Stefl.

The campus visit started with a brief visit to the Chemistry laboratories at SUNY-ESF where students had an opportunity to see some of the best analytical instruments. After the arrival of other high schools, Dr. Beal gave an energetic presentation. SASCS-HS students joined their peers from other high schools and worked on a group activity, building system diagrams for 10 different global issues. This activity helped students visualizing today’s pressing matters and developing a deeper understanding of global problems. Following the activity, students had lunch and a guided tour visiting campus library, hydrology laboratory and paper engineering departments. At the Hydrology laboratory, students listened a presentation about water flumes and how they are used to study river systems. Later, while visiting the paper engineering department, they learnt about the paper production and how the by-product are being used to produce biodiesel.

The trip was very valuable and informative for students. They enjoyed learning about different career opportunities and what SUNY-ESF has to offer to their prospective students.

Student-Athletes from Syracuse University’s Leadership Council Inspire Accountability

On Friday, September 22nd, our high school was visited by a group of athletes who are part of a leadership council at Syracuse University.  Mr. Mark Trumbo, Syracuse University's Student-Athlete Engagement Coordinator, was accompanied by Alana O’Neill and Maddie Pack from the women’s soccer team; Hannah Dossett, Alexa Romero, and Samantha Fernandez from the women’s softball team; and Marcus Cunningham, David Lipka, and Stephen Rehfuss from the men’s lacrosse team.  Mr. Trumbo and the athletes spent a few hours engaging groups of students in an interactive dialogue regarding the topics of leadership, accountability, responsibility, and various aspects of college life.  Their message to our student body was inspiring, and the experience was a great way for our students to begin the new school year!

New Playground Reaches the Height of Fun

On Tuesday September 26th, 2017, Climbing high and sliding fast are easier than ever for students at SASCS Elementary School on South Salina Street, with the addition of a new playground. The colorful equipment echoes the school’s uniform colors and offers more space for free-time adventures than the previous playground, which is still available for students to use. Tall poles capped with palm fronds add a tropical feel to the site, which features plenty of wood chips for safe landings, daring rescues and darting about.
