Tuesday, March 2nd, 2022—In honor of National Read Across America Day, we encourage all of our Atoms and their families to find time today (this week or month) to read a good book. Below are some fun facts about reading that may surprise you.

• Reading is a great Stress Reliever - Studies show that reading reduces stress by 68%
• It all adds up - Reading just 20 minutes a day adds up to reading 1,800,000 words per year
• The fastest way to build vocabulary - Children learn 4,000–12,000 words every year by reading

Dr. Seuss said it the best, "The more that you read, the more things you'll know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go!"

We hope everyone can find time to pick up a book and celebrate National Read Across America Day.

Friday, February 18th, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school recognizes its students for the Students of the Month ceremony. Each month, Atoms are selected for Students of the Month for demonstrating the monthly character trait. For February, Atoms were recognized for showing the character trait of Ambition by showing they have a strong desire to do or achieve something.

We want to congratulate these 'ambitious' students selected for February's Student of the Month ceremony! Keep up the great work.

Friday, February 25th, 2022—It's game day, Atoms! Come cheer on your Syracuse Academy of Science Atoms as they take on the number 3 seed, Jamesville-DeWitt in the Class A Semifinals. The boys' basketball game will take place at Onondaga Community College's SRC Arena on Tuesday, March 1^st at 5:30 PM.

Friday, February 18th, 2022—In honor of Black History Month, Syracuse Academy of Science high school's art department shares with you its collaborative piece featuring the Syracuse Academy of Science (SAS) Choir and artwork from students in Art 8, Printmaking, Creative Arts Drawing, and Painting.

This month, Ms. Carlson's music class has studied music theory, singing, and recording techniques to perform the award-winning song "Stand Up" by Cynthia Erivo. "Stand Up" is featured in the Academy Award-nominated movie Harriet. In this video, you will hear the impressive vocal and percussion performance from SAS Choir, as the Atoms sing, stomp, and create a beat and rhythm to the song "Stand Up." The Atoms selected the song "Stand Up" for its powerful, positive message and contemporary resonance.

The musical recording is accompanied by moving masterpieces from Mrs. Merrithew's art classes such as Art 8, Creative Arts Drawing & Painting, and Printmaking. Students submitted works in different art mediums ranging from dry-point printing to large mixed media portraits. Atoms in Creative Arts drew inspiration from the works of Aaron Douglas, who is often called the 'Father of African American Art.'

We want to thank all of our students and teachers, Ms. Carlson and Mrs. Merrithew, for their incredible talent, hard work, and creativity. The students' and teachers' efforts and achievements have certainly not gone unnoticed. 

Friday, February 11th, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science middle school Project-Based Learning (PBL) 6^th and 7^th-grade students had an opportunity of a lifetime to create an interactive game to teach students about becoming strong money managers. Each grade was responsible for designing and pitching to Empower Federal Credit Union, their game that demonstrated their understanding of the importance of saving, spending, and sharing money.

The 6^th-grade students created a game that teaches students about the importance of sharing, saving, and spending on items that are needs and not wants. Meanwhile, the 7^th-grade students created a game teaching students how to spend money responsibly. 

Each grade presented their games to Empower Federal Credit Union's Financial Education Officer, Cheryl Welles. Cheryl will select a winning team from each grade and will use their game to help teach elementary school students about the importance of saving, sharing, and spending.

Monday, February 14th, 2022—The Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school students in Ms. Fogarty's 2^nd-grade class spread a little love, kindness, and adjectives to their classmates on Valentine's Day. Instead of passing out valentines day cards, students passed out compliment adjectives that best matched the personality of their classmates. Some of these adjectives include friendly, kind, hard worker, rockin' reader, and math whiz! Atoms walked around the room and placed their adjectives in their classmates' heart cutouts. These kind words and adjectives certainly put a smile on all the students' faces. We hope everyone had a happy Valentine's Day!

Saturday, February 12th, 2022—Early Saturday morning, the Syracuse Academy of Science high school Robotics Team attended the First Tech Challenge (FTC) Qualifying Tournament at Clarkson University. This tournament inspires students to learn like engineers. Participants must design, build and program their robots to solve challenging missions. 

The FTC mission this year required robots to detect the scoring element, collect the cubes and balls, and deliver them to the shipping hub, as well as bring the ducks into the field. To compete, the Atoms prepared a robot that can collect and lift and drop the debris to the desired level of the shipping hub!

Wednesday, February 16th, 2022—This month, Syracuse Academy of Science high school Atoms competed in the 2022 Indoor Track and Field Sectional Championship at Onondaga Community College. Students were recognized for their incredible work this season, and many students improved their personal records and advanced to State Qualifiers, which takes place today! Please give a round of applause to the following student-athletes. 

• Ermine Reddock, 12^th Grade: Weight Throwing Champion & Shot Put, 3^rd place.

Ermine holds a personal record and a school-record of 35-4.5 in Weight Throw.

• Christopher Williams, 11^th Grade: 55 Meter Dash, 2^nd place.

Christopher holds a personal record & school record of 6.79 in the 55 Meter Dash. 

• Amir Taylor, 10^th Grade: 55 Meter Hurdle & High Jump, 2^nd place (in both events).

Amir holds a personal record and a school-record of 6'0" for the High Jump.

Syracuse Academy of Science placed 2^nd in the 4x2 Relay. The student-athletes on this team include Nasir Parks, Maffei Krubally, Dzemila Tihic, and Toni Nwaniki. 

State Qualifiers begin at 4:00 PM at Onondaga Community College. Congratulations and good luck to coach Donniesha Terry and the student-athletes for all their hard work! Let's bring home the Gold, Atoms.

Friday, February 11th, 2022—It's hard to believe that it's already the 100^th Day of School. One thing is for sure, the Atoms are 100 Days Smarter, 100 Days Wiser, 100 Days Stronger, and of course, there are 100 reasons we love Syracuse Academy of Science!

To celebrate the 100th Day of School, Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school with a variety of creative activities. Teachers and staff dressed as elderly citizens, while Atoms used an app to see how they would look if they were 100 years old! Students also shared 100 reasons why they love SAS. Tuesday, February 2nd, 2022—Syracuse Academy of Science high school student-athlete Steyvon Jones has been recognized by Bishop Ludden Junior-Senior High School's head basketball coach, Gallagher Driscoll, for his impressive basketball skills.

On Tuesday, February 2^nd, Section 3 coaches in Central New York were tasked with picking opposing players who improved their basketball game. All coaches gave their opinions on players from other schools, and Coach Driscoll sang Steyvon's praises, "Steyvon is a good-size guard who has worked on his shot and is real comfortable shooting the three-ball no matter the situation. He can score in a lot of different ways." Congratulations, Steyvon; we are proud of you and all you have accomplished on and off the court.
