Friday, February 26th, 2021—Throughout the month of February, Syracuse Academy of Science celebrated Black History Month. Students in elementary, middle and high school observed the month by learning about contributions African Americans have made to this country. Today, we share the work created by the high school Atoms in the Social Justice Committee. Their posters highlight a celebration of various African American achievements. These achievements include the following:

Friday, February 26th, 2021—This next Teacher Spotlight is one you certainly don’t want to scroll past! Syracuse Academy of Science high school had an opportunity to virtually interview English teacher, Ms. Boller who shares some great advice for the Atoms, along with her favorite book, biggest accomplishment and oh so much more! Check out our interview below with high school English teacher, Ms. Boller.

Interview with Ms. Boller

• What three traits define you? Determined, Caring, and Helpful.
• What is your greatest accomplishment? My greatest accomplishment is graduating Syracuse University with honors. 
• Best book you have ever read? The best book I have ever read is The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath.
• What is one thing you cannot resist?(food/dessert/candy/etc.) One thing I cannot resist is chocolate chip cookies.
• If you could have dinner with one person living or dead who would they be and why? One person I would want to have dinner with would be Nic Stone because she is an excellent writer who likes to write about challenging issues for teenagers.
• What advice would you give to kids who are struggling at school? For students who are struggling I would tell them to reach out to their teachers. All your teachers are willing to help you, you just have to ask.
• Tell us, what is something that might surprise us about you? Something that might surprise you about me is that I won a writing contest while in middle school and was published in a teen writing anthology.

Monday, March 1st, 2021—In honor of Women’s History Month, Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school will be honoring 22 noble women who have made a cultural and or historical impact on society. Some of the women featured include and are not limited to: Princess Diana, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Anne Frank, Michelle Obama, Malala Yousafzai and many more. Friday, February 19th, 2021—In honor of Black History Month, Syracuse Academy of Science High School Choir collaborated with Christian Brothers Academy to create this virtual choir performance that will leave you in complete amazement! The students recorded André J. Thomas's "I Dream a World." The basis of this song comes from the text of world renowned poet, novelist, fiction writer and playwright,  Langston Hughes, who is influential to the students at both Syracuse Academy of Science High School and Christian Brothers Academy.

During the months of January and February students at both schools met over Zoom to rehearse with their peers and teachers, Ms. Carlson and Mrs. Moore. During their rehearsal, students would also discuss the meaning of Langston Hughes’ text and how it relates to their hopes and dreams for the world in 2021. Some of their hopes include: being more compassionate, being patient with one another, showing empathy and of course being able to sing together again (sometime soon). We are excited and thrilled to have created a recording that showcases a contemporary choral composer and the text of an important poet.
