#SASAtoms Visit Corning Museum of Glass

On Friday, November 2, 2018, #SASCS Art Club and Shehoop Club went on a field trip to the Corning Museum of Glass. #SASAtoms enjoyed watching demos and visiting the contemporary art wing of the museum. The students then traveled to Ithaca Commons for pizza and enjoyed the sites around the lovely college town of Ithaca. These community outings are just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Not sure what the Shehoop Club is? The acronym stands for -students, helping, everyone, handle, outside, opportunities, and priorities. We are so excited to share the great work they do this year with you.

College Guidance Events at #SASCS

When we say we are a college preparatory school, we mean it in every sense of the phrase. Our college guidance dept. had a busy start to the year, already hosting speakers from SUNY Geneseo, Alfred State, Princeton, the Air Force Academy, and SUNY Brockport. Each of these schools brings something unique to share with our #SASAtoms about the college application process and experience.

On Friday, November 2, 2018, we hosted a Financial Information Session for our 12th grade #SASAtoms and their families. LaSonya Griggs, Associate Dean of Enrollment Management at Tompkins Cortland Community College, was our speaker. She presented some financial aid opportunities to our students and explained in detail the application process. The session was designed to help students gain knowledge of the process and to ensure that the application is completed accurately and that all required documentation is provided.

Next up, our college fair on November 15th. We are expecting over 23 colleges from across the state to join us in helping us build success one ATOM at a time.

2018 Science Fair at #SASCS High School

On Friday, November 2, 2018, The #SASAtoms had a strong showing at the Annual High School Science Fair, showcasing diverse projects from all levels at the High School. Cutting-edge research projects from our cooperative summer program with SUNY Oswego were complemented by bold freshman solutions to everyday problems. Winners, finalists and honorable mentions to be announced next week! Keep your eyes peeled for submissions to the 40th annual Central New York Science & Engineering Fair and Genius Olympiad next spring.

Engaging our scholars in meaningful scientific inquiry is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Construction Career Day for #SASCS

On Thursday, October 11, 2018, #SAS high school students traveled to the NYS Fairgrounds for Construction Career Day, an event put together to introduce high school students to a wide
assortment of career opportunities within the construction industries. Students were able to participate in many different hands-on activities, including the operation of excavating
equipment, welding, bricklaying, painting, and carpentry. We are building success one ATOM at a time.

High School Tours Lockheed Martin

On Friday, October 5, 2018, Lockheed Martin, an American global aerospace, defense, security and advanced technologies company, hosted #SASCS high school 11th and 12th grade students. Students toured the facility located in Liverpool, New York learning about the advanced technologies which makes the company the world's largest defense contractor. Exposing our #SASAtoms to advanced technologies is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Mentorship Success at #SASCS

The #SASCS mentoring program recruits, trains, and matches high school students to mentor elementary students located at the Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School. #SASAtom mentors spend at least one hour every two weeks with their student. This relationship helps youth build basic life skills, enhance their self-esteem and gives the youth ongoing encouragement to accomplish long-term goals for both the high school and elementary student. This program is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

First Grade Gets Creative at Feats of Clay

On Monday, November 5, 2018, first grade #SASAtoms asked, "How is clay made?" and more while visiting Feats of Clay in Manlius, NY. During their visit, our #SASAtoms chose a custom piece of pottery to decorate from options of race cars, emojis, dragons, lizards, snails, puzzle pieces, and more. When selecting the perfect color to paint their pottery, our #SASAtoms learned about mixing colors and why pottery must be glazed before firing. As our first graders expressed themselves creatively, they asked questions about the process. The finished masterpieces will be ready in just a few short weeks! Teaching our #SASAtoms the value of creative expression and scientific inquiry is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

October Student of the Month Ceremony at #SASCS Elementary

On Tuesday, October 30, The #SASCS Elementary October Student of the Month Ceremony awarded students for their trustworthiness. The students who received this award are honest and lead by example every day in their classrooms.

Our ceremony included dress down passes for students who received the most DOJO's and a fun PBIS game where a student from each kindergarten class dug through a spooky bucket of spaghetti to try and extract as many plastic eyeballs out as they could in 10 seconds. All three kindergarten classes were winners in this game, and earned a dress down pass for their whole class! Terra also joined us for our ceremony, and handed out scholarships to our now 4th grade students who performed at a level 3 or 4 on their New York State assessment. Great job, #SASAtoms! Celebrating our students is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.
