Thursday, May 25th, 2023: Dr. Ehat Ercanli is an integral member of the Science Academies of New York community. He is one of the founding members of Syracuse Academy of Science. He is another deserving member that Superintendent Dr. Tolga Hayali awarded into the “SANY Hall of Fame” during our 20th Anniversary celebration.
Dr. Ercanli is an engineering and computer science professor at Syracuse University with expertise in computing systems, system verification, and databases. While pursuing his graduate degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, he voluntarily took part in numerous initiatives to assist students in need and provided educational guidance. Recognizing that motivation and a strong foundation are crucial for success in college, he actively participated in the design and curriculum creation for a charter school initiative with individual attention as its key emphasis. As a result, he co-founded Horizon Science Academies as STEM-focused, college-preparatory institutions, which expanded into multiple campuses. He relocated to Syracuse in 1999 to take an academic position at Syracuse University. He contributed to the founding and establishment of Syracuse Academy of Science, one of the first charter schools in New York with a college preparatory concentration. He served on the school board and presided over it from its formation in 2003 until 2009.
Thank you for your advocacy and dedication to all children in the community!

Thursday, May 25th, 2023: During the Science Academies of New York's 20th Anniversary celebration, Superintendent Dr. Tolga Hayali honored eight exceptional individuals with “SANY Hall of Fame” awards. One of them is Dr. Lorrie Clemo. Dr. Clemo proudly serves as the 15th President of D’Youville University. Dr. Clemo is responsible for overseeing all operations—both academic and administrative within the educational institution. She was asked to get involved by the President of SANY when Dr. Damkaci proposed offering Science Academy of New York (SANY) students an opportunity to do summer research on the university campus. Dr. Clemo feels that someday, she will read about a SANY scholar who has made an important discovery that promises to improve humankind and our world.
Thank you, Dr. Clemo, for your continued dedication to SANY and all children of the community.
Thursday, May 25th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science celebrated 20 years of growth and success in Syracuse. Our school has come a long way since we were founded in 2003. In that first year, Syracuse Academy served only grades 7-9 and graduated its inaugural class in 2007. The school welcomed Director Dr. Tolga Hayali in 2008. Under Dr. Hayali’s leadership, Syracuse Academy opened its elementary and middle school campuses. Syracuse Academy was replicated in Utica in 2013 once Utica Academy of Science opened, serving grades 6-9. There are now four Charter Schools and seven buildings managed by Dr. Hayali, operating under the SANY umbrella.
The past two decades wouldn’t have been possible without all the support from our teachers, staff, families, alums, and community members. Thank you for everything you have done and will continue to do for all children. We honored eight outstanding community members for their dedication to our youth during the celebration. Stay tuned for more information about our awardees!
