9/11 Remembrance

Science Academies of New York (SANY) honors and remembers those whose lives were tragically changed 20 years ago today, and thanks the first responders. United we stand!

Saturday, September 11th, 2021It’s hard to believe that 20 years ago to this day, our lives tragically changed. Many of us know where we were when we heard the news that day. Some of us heard it on the radio, or watched the news that morning. While others may have heard the news from a coworker or a family member or friend. A day in history that we will never forget.

Today, we mourn those who lost their lives, and grieve with those who lost friends and family. We would like to take this moment to thank all of our brave first responders, and those who have served or are currently serving in the United States Armed Forces. United we stand.

CNY Innovation Challenge

Syracuse Academy of Science middle school 7th grade project based learning students competed in the CNY Innovation Challenge where they pitched their creative solutions to a team of judges.

Tuesday, July 27th, 2021Syracuse Academy of Science middle school 7th grade project based learning students put their creativity and business savvy skills to the test when competing in the CNY Innovation Challenge. Students in grades 6-12 had an opportunity to create and pitch their creative solution to one of the problems below for a chance to win $500.

  • Create a product/service that would make your school life easier
  • Develop a way for students to save time/be more efficient
  • Invent a way to increase understanding of various concepts taught in class
  • Design an app that will help increase communication or make teleworking easier
  • Fabricate an invention that would improve leisure activities
  • Conceive an alternative to standardized tests for measuring student performance
  • Build a product/service that will help the environment
  • Devise a way to enhance family relationships
  • Think of an idea that would help students determine a career path
  • Generate a product/service that the world “can’t live without”

Students were tasked with not only finding a creative solution to one of the problems listed above, but also documenting intellectual property to protect concepts that could be used in a patent application. In addition to designing and developing an idea, students would have to develop a solid go-to-market plan and a marketing pitch to “sell” their concept. Throughout this process, students learned various strategies to advance their idea and take a product/service to market.

Syracuse Academy of Science middle school is proud to share that they had two teams of 7th grade students competing in this challenge. The first team's product was: Interchangeable Shoes. The second team's creative solution was: Fodly - a website where SANY families can find inexpensive items. While there was some fierce competition in the CNY Innovation Challenge, the Atoms tried their best and we would like to take this moment to congratulate both teams for a job well done!

Edgar Allan Poe's the Raven

Syracuse Academy of Science middle school students in 7D memorize and recite Edgar Allan Poe's most famous piece, The Raven.

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2021Syracuse Academy of Science middle school Atoms in 7D studied a classic piece in American Literature, The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. Published in 1845, this poem consists of 18 stanzas and 108 lines and shows incredible symbolism about a gentleman who mourns and longs for his beloved Lenore. As part of their curriculum, students were tasked with not only learning about Poe’s incredible work, but also memorizing the 108 lines of The Raven.

Recognized by many as one of Edgar Allan Poe’s most well known pieces written, The Raven has been parodied many times over the years, especially around Halloween. From television series such as the Gilmore Girls and the Simpsons, to even magazines and comic book series such as Batman, Calvin and Hobbs and MAD Magazine. Way to go Atoms, we are very proud of you!

The Class of 2021's Senior Banquet

Members of the Class of 2021 from Syracuse Academy of Science high school dress in formal attire for their Senior Banquet.

Friday, June 11th, 2021On a late Friday evening, members of Syracuse Academy of Science high school's Class of 2021 dressed up for a formal event celebrating all their hard work and accomplishments not only this past year but their entire academic career.

In true 2021 form, many iconic moments looked a bit different from proms to graduation (and many moments in between) this event was no different. While  Syracuse Academy of Science high school did not host a prom for its students, they did however do something just as special for its senior class. Students had an opportunity to dress up and attend a formal dining event with their fellow classmates, followed by entertainment from award-winning mentalist, Dustin Dean, who has astounded millions of people around the world with his mind reading and intuitive abilities. Please click here to visit our Facebook page to view more pictures from this event.

We hope all of our Atoms are having a fantastic, healthy and safe summer!
