Wednesday, March 1st, 2023: College visits are important to our education at the Science Academies of New York. Syracuse Academy of Science High School students visited Utica University and were given a thorough campus tour, including academic and athletic facilities. Students ate lunch in the dining hall to top off the college experience. After lunch, scholars moved across the Mohawk River to SUNY Polytechnic Institute. After an information session, students experienced an in-depth view of another campus, including their tech and makerspaces.
Tuesday, February 28th, 2023: February's character trait was Ambition at Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School. Ambition is to have a strong desire to do or achieve something. An ambitious student sets goals and works hard to meet them. Students of the month are announced on the morning announcements by the Syracuse Academy of Science Dean, Mrs. Miller. Students of the Month are given a special pin to wear and are celebrated by staff and students all day. Congratulations to our Ambitious Atoms!

Friday, March 3rd, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science High School music students traveled to our state’s capital. Atoms were honored to perform in the capitol building, visited the SUNY Albany campus and music program, and attended a show before going out to dinner. Students also met with Syracuse Academy of Science alumni Illyn McLaurin and heard about her freshman experience.
It was an excellent opportunity for our music students to explore Albany and get a taste of college life just a couple of months before graduation!
Thursday, February 16th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science 3rd Graders had the chance to swing over to The Ultimate Goal Family Sport Center in Marcellus for a day of athletic fun and team-building! Atoms played soccer and dodgeball, used the rope swing, and played an intense game of musical chairs. Thanks to Ultimate Goal for hosting all of our classes!
Please see our Facebook for more photos.
Thursday, March 23rd, 2023: Ian Mortimer, the President of the Golisano Institute in Rochester, visited Syracuse Academy of Science high school. The Golisano Institute is a nonprofit that offers a non-traditional alternative to college for high school graduates looking to enter the business world. The two-year certificate program will focus on business and entrepreneurship. The school will help decrease the cost of attending a traditional business school. Students will be charged $8,900 a year with scholarships available. It’s an excellent alternative for students looking to land a career in business or start their own company.
Thank you, Ian, for your time.
Wednesday, February 15th, 2023: STEM Night returned to Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School for the first time in years. One activity had families working together to build a structure to survive an earthquake! Another had atoms and their families trying to build a house of cards. Atoms also had fun making bouncy balls, learning which objects sink or float, and even paper airplanes! Ms. Pat from Bett's Branch Library was here too with an activity where students got to create different buildings from our local Syracuse community.
Atoms that participated in STEM night earned a dress-down pass. It was a fun-filled night of science!
Wednesday, March 8th, 2023: “Dream with ambition, lead with conviction, and see yourself in a way that others might not see you simply because they’ve never seen it before. And we will applaud you every step of the way," Vice President Kamala Harris.
We thank the strong women at Syracuse Academy of Science who contribute their time, talent, and dedication to educating and inspiring our students. Thank you for everything you do today and every day.
Sunday, March 5th, 2023: The Syracuse Academy of Science robotics team competed in the FTC MVCC Excelsior Championship. With Mr. Zengin's direction, robotics team members won three out of five matches before moving on to the semi-finals and finals. One team from our alliance and Inspire award winner advanced to the next level!
Saturday, February 18th, 2023: The Syracuse Academy of Science Robotics Club attended the FTC Fishkill Qualifying tournament with two teams and thirteen students. The New Wave team won four out of five matches, moved to the semi-finals, finished the tournament as one of the fourth alliances, and received second place in the best design award. The SAS ATOMS FTC robotics team competed successfully and won the THINK award. The Think award is based entirely on the Engineering portfolio, which includes the journey of the robot, sketches, math and physics algorithms, robot design, and the game strategy.
A huge thanks to Mr. Kovar and Ms. Hahn for their hard work!
Please congratulate the following students for their hard work in the competition.

Thursday, February 2nd, 2023: Let's kick off winter recess with a student spotlight! Seventh-grade student Jayda James became the 7th-grade social studies teacher and taught a lesson to her classmates on how power is divided in the United States government. Jayda was able to hold her classmate's attention as she walked them through the role of the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. This lesson was our student's first step into becoming involved and informed citizens!
Great job leading the lesson, Jayda!
