Welcome to fifth grade at Syracuse Academy of Science. Our school wants to create a safe, healthy, and enjoyable learning experience for all students. Students will begin to switch classes.
Fifth-grade math covers a wide variety of topics. In this course, students will understand the value of whole numbers and decimals, multiply and divide multi-digit numbers, and add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals. Fifth graders will learn to add, subtract, multiply and divide with fractions that have, unlike denominators. Geometry is another primary unit of study in fifth-grade math. They will learn to determine the volume of a rectangular prism and the area of rectangles with fractional lengths. Students will also learn the classification of shapes by attributes. Finally, fifth graders end the year graphing on the coordinate plane.
Fifth-grade science will cover various exciting topics to help students build a strong science foundation. Our science units include: How Scientists work, The Engineering Process, Cells to Body Systems, How living things grow and reproduce, Ecosystems, Energy and Ecosystems, Natural Resources, Changes to Earth's Surface, The Rock Cycle, Fossils, Earth's Ocean, The Solar System and Universe, Matter, Light and Sound, and Forces and motion. Within each unit, students will explore science through interactive, hands-on labs. The class will be engaged in discussions, exploration, independent and group work, and experiments.
Fifth-grade English Language Arts will cover New York State performance indicators in the areas of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Students will benefit from the whole group and small group instruction reading about the world around us and our community. Students will study several different genres of literature through short stories and novels. Spelling, writing, and grammar skills will continue to develop as students practice spelling grade-appropriate words and follow the writing process to develop writing pieces.
Social Studies in the fifth grade focuses on the United States in the Western Hemisphere. Social studies students study history, geography, economics, government, and civics to help them become critical thinkers and responsible citizens in our American democracy.
In addition to the core subject areas, students will participate in special area classes, such as STEM, physical education, art, and Spanish. Students can participate in afterschool clubs and activities, such as Intramurals, Math Olympiads, Science Olympiads, and Robotics. At Syracuse Academy of Science, we want our students to excel in academic and fine arts fields.

Students in sixth grade will be prepared to enter middle school with high standards in all core subject areas. In addition to academics, students are prepared to enter middle school by practicing daily organization skills, switching classes, and using a locker between each class.
Sixth-grade Math covers a wide variety of topics. In this course, students will study number sense (place value of whole numbers and decimals, computation skills, and decimals. Another topic of study in math is the measurement, learning about the units for capacity. Students will study the three E's of Algebra (exponents, expressions, and equations). Students will be asked to solve mathematical operations with various fractions and mixed numbers. In addition, students will use their knowledge of fractions to create proportions, rates, and ratios. Geometry is another primary unit of study in sixth-grade math. The significant skills required are finding the area and volume, identifying congruency and similar shapes, and working on the coordinate plane.
In science, students will learn about concepts connected to Earth and Space. The science curriculum covers various topics, including Space Systems, the History of the Earth, Earth Systems, Weather, and Climate. Within each unit, students will explore science through interactive, hands-on labs. The class will be engaged in discussions, exploration, independent and group work, and experiments.
Sixth-grade English Language Arts will cover New York State performance indicators in the areas of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Students will learn and study different genres in literature, as the significant units of study are: Fiction and Nonfiction; Short Stories; Types of Nonfiction; Poetry; Drama; and Themes in Folk Literature. Students will strengthen their writing and grammar skills as they develop writing pieces associated with each unit of study. In addition to the primary units, students will also read various novels, both as a unit of study and independently.
Sixth-grade social studies is a dramatic departure from the K-5 content of general social studies concepts and the history of the United States and New York.
Sixth graders embark on a journey that begins millions of years ago and ends with studying significant 20th-century events. This immense period is examined almost exclusively through the viewpoint of the study of the Eastern Hemisphere.
In addition to the core subject areas, students will participate in special area classes, such as STEM, physical education, art, Project Based Learning, and Spanish. Students can participate in afterschool clubs and activities, such as Intramurals, Math Olympiads, STEAM Science Olympiads, and Robotics. At Syracuse Academy of Science, we want our students to excel in academic and fine arts fields.
Sixth grade Project Based Learning, or PBL: Offers a unique experience in which students gain deeper knowledge through problem-solving and real-world challenges. As a part of this class, students will be engaged in projects and will be learning speaking and listening skills through presentations to advocate for themselves and to respect, cooperate and work with others, including community members, while becoming positive role models in our school and community.

Seventh-grade students will be prepared to develop the character and academic skills necessary to succeed in high school and college, be self‐sufficient, successful, and happy in the competitive world, and build a better tomorrow for themselves and us all.
In seventh-grade Mathematics, instructional time will focus on three areas: (1) developing an understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (2) developing an understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations; and (3) drawing inferences about populations based on samples. Through their learning in the Ratios and Proportional Relationships domain, students extend their understanding of ratios and develop an understanding of proportionality to solve single- and multi-step problems, a wide variety of percent problems, and problems about scale drawings. Through their learning in the Number System and the Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities domains, students develop a unified understanding of numbers, recognizing fractions, decimals, and percents as different representations of rational numbers, use the arithmetic of rational numbers as they formulate expressions and equations in one variable and use these equations to solve problems. Through their learning in the Statistics and Probability domain, students begin informal work with random sampling to generate data sets and learn about the importance of representative samples for drawing inferences.
In Science, students will learn about concepts connected to Physical Science. The science curriculum covers various topics, including Structure and Properties of Matter, Chemical Reactions, Forces and Interactions, Energy, Waves, and Electromagnetic Radiation. Within each unit, students will explore science through interactive, hands-on labs. The class will be engaged in discussions, exploration, independent and group work, and experiments.
Seventh-grade English Language Arts will cover New York State performance indicators in the areas of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. Students will learn and study different genres in literature, as the significant units of study are: Fiction; Elements of a Story; Short Stories; Poetry; Drama; Nonfiction; and Narratives. Students will enhance their reading and comprehension skills, develop effective speaking and discussion techniques, and strengthen their writing and grammar skills as they develop writing pieces associated with each unit of study. In addition to the primary units, students will also read various novels, both as a unit of study and independently.
Seventh-grade Social Studies is arranged chronologically and incorporates geography and economic, social, and political trends. The course content is divided into eight key ideas, tracing the human experience in the United States from pre-Columbian times until the Civil War, with a focus on the people, events, and places in New York as applicable.
In addition to the core subject areas, seventh-grade students will participate in special area classes, such as physical education, art, Project Based Learning, and Spanish. Students can participate in afterschool clubs and activities, such as Student Council, Yearbook, Art Club, Intramurals, Math Olympiads, STEAM Science Olympiads, and Robotics. At Syracuse Academy of Science, we want our students to excel in academic and fine arts fields.
Seventh grade Project Based Learning or PBL: Offers a unique experience in which students gain a more profound knowledge through problem-solving and real-world challenges. As a part of this class, students will be engaged in projects and learning speaking and listening skills through presentations to advocate for themselves and to respect, cooperate and work with others, including community members, while becoming positive role models in our school and community.
