Saturday, November 20th, 2021—It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of Coach Irene Thompson, a beloved colleague, mentor and very good friend to so many at Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School. Coach Thompson passed away peacefully on Monday, November 15th, 2021.
Starting as a track coach in 2005, Coach Thompson had an eye for talent, and built track team dynasties at Syracuse Academy of Science high school, leading Atoms to be the best in their division. In fact, Coach Thompson led 23 different Gold Medalists in the sectional events, and had over 17 students win individual titles, which allowed them to qualify and move on to higher levels of competitiveness, including collegiate athletics.
Thompson was the true definition of a leader who was the embodiment of honesty, hard work and dedication, inspiring everyone to be the best, including her athletes. Year after year, Thompson raised money for the track program through various fundraisers and social events. She would also take her students on field trips to New York City and Pennsylvania to compete in State Championship competitions.
It’s Thompson’s heart of gold that left an impact on everyone she met and will most certainly be missed. Off the track, Thompson always put her student athletes first making sure they were equipped with sneakers and proper clothing for events.
Coach Thompson leaves behind a lasting impact and coaching legacy that reaches beyond the motivation and resilience she taught her students and athletes on the track and in the classroom at Syracuse Academy of Science high school. As we take this moment to remember Irene, we want to extend our deepest sympathy to Irene Thompson’s family and friends.
Below you will find visitation and funeral information. Her funeral which is open to everyone will start at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, November 23rd, 2021 at Tucker Missionary Baptist Church located at 515 Oakwood Ave, Syracuse, NY 13205.
