Inspiring Future Engineers: NYS DOT Workers Visit SAS MS
Tuesday, October 22nd, 2024: Syracuse Academy of Science 6th and 7th-grade students had the incredible opportunity to learn from the New York State Department of Transportation experts about the massive I-81 viaduct project here in Syracuse!
Our Atoms were fascinated to hear about this $2.25 billion project, which aims to transform how we get around the city by creating new access points to make getting downtown more accessible and efficient.
With an estimated five-year timeline, this project will bring significant changes to our community. But that’s not all! The NYSDOT team also led two hands-on STEM activities: students worked together to build a tower using plastic cups and string (where they could only touch the string!) and constructed a bridge using paper! Scholars did an incredible job, and we may even have some future architects in the building.
Thank you to the New York State DOT team for sparking curiosity and teamwork and helping our students see how their city is evolving!
