SAS HS Earth Day Guest Speaker Connects Classroom Learning to Real-World Impact

Syracuse Academy of Science High School Guest Speaker Brings Marine Science to Life for Earth Day

Thursday, April 23rd, 2026: In honor of Earth Day, Dr. Ay's high school science class had the incredible opportunity to welcome Charles G. Usher, CEO of Marine Pollution Control Corporation, as a guest speaker.

Mr. Usher delivered an engaging and informative presentation on marine pollution and oil spills, directly connecting to the topics students have been exploring this year, including plastic degradation, the role of bacteria in oil spill cleanup, and marine life protection.

Drawing from his extensive experience in environmental protection, he shared real-world insights, including his firsthand knowledge of the Exxon Valdez oil spill. His stories helped students better understand the long-term environmental impact of pollution and the critical importance of protecting our oceans and ecosystems.

The presentation was both inspiring and educational, showing students how science extends far beyond the classroom and plays a vital role in addressing real-world challenges and careers.
