Sending Off Our Seniors

Tuesday, June 24, 2020—Musicians from all over the world joined the Syracuse Academy of Science High School Band and music teacher Lexi Carlson to record their instrument’s part for Pomp and Circumstance in order to create a graduation song that today’s seniors will remember.

Pomp and Circumstance, composed by Edward Elgar and arranged here by Ms. Carlson, is the piece played for high school and college graduations all over the United States. Its emblematic melody is slow and regal, making it instantly recognizable and also challenging to perform.

The seven guest musicians including faculty of Montana State UniversityCase Western Reserve University, the Performing Institute of Minnesota - PIM, and members of Camerata Ireland, the Chicago Afrobeat Project, and Syracuse’s own Lyncourt Community Band The guests virtually joined the band by preparing and recording the music for Pomp and Circumstance on their own; the Syracuse Academy of Science band students learned it remotely through one on one sessions with Ms. Carlson over Zoom and sent in frequent practice recordings. Way to go, Atoms!
