SAS 4th Graders Receive Awards for Terra State Test Scores

Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School Rewards 3rd Graders for State Tests

Tuesday, March 28th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School held a ceremony in honor of our 4th graders that achieved a level 3 or 4 on last year's ELA and Math state tests as part of Terra Science and Education's Junior Scholars Awards. The Junior Scholars Award is just one of several scholarship opportunities provided to SANY students by Terra. 4th-grade scholars received a $25 gift card for achieving a 3 or 4 on either the ELA or Math (up to $50 for a 3 or 4 on both), with another $25 awarded to students that achieved a four on both! These awards challenge students to do their best and prepare for future high-stakes tests. This year's third graders joined the celebration and cheered on the 4th graders for their incredible achievements while gaining extra motivation to do their best on the upcoming state tests.

We are incredibly proud of the effort put forth by all of our 4th graders, and we can't wait to see what the 3rd and 4th grades can do this year!

NOAA & H. Lee White Maritime Museum Members Bring ROV Workshop to SAS HS

Syracuse Academy of Science 8th Graders Learn Build, Design & Test ROVs

Tuesday, April 11th, 2023: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) members have teamed up with The H. Lee White Maritime Museum in Oswego to create The Proposed Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary. This proposal would protect the underwater world and preserve the historical shipwrecks and aircraft beneath the surface. This partnership creates opportunities for educating our communities and youth.

NOAA and The Oswego Maritime Museum members visited Syracuse Academy of Science High School together. Students participated in a workshop to learn STEM career opportunities through NOAA, discover the proposed Sanctuary at Lake Ontario, and use the design and engineering process to create their own Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV.) Students spent two hours of the workshop designing and building an ROV, which concluded with testing their ROV for Neutral Buoyancy.

In May, students will visit the shores of Lake Ontario to test their ROVs in a friendly competition. If mother nature cooperates, we're hoping for a boat ride on the Great Lake to the Lake Ontario Lighthouse.

Congressman Brandon Williams Visits SAS 2nd Graders

Syracuse Academy of Science 2nd Graders Invite Representative Brandon Williams to Class

Tuesday, April 11th, 2023: Congressman Brandon Williams visited Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School after 2nd graders wrote two letters to his office inviting him to speak to our students. We were honored that he chose to accept our offer! The Congressman not only spent some time reading to Atoms, but he also told them about why he chose a job in the government and how his desire to make changes to our country and serve the citizens was his driving force. He told us that he hasn't been part of the government for very long, only about 100 days, and shared what he did for a living before entering the government. Congressman Williams was in the Navy and spent most of his time on a submarine off the coast of San Francisco. He shared details with students about how long he was on the submarine, what he ate, how large it was, and how the submarine could descend and then return to the water's surface. Students could also ask questions about the hardest and best parts of his job as a Congressman!

SANY Superintendent Dr. Hayali took the Congressman and his wife on a tour of our school. What a wonderful experience for our 2nd-grade Atoms! Thank you, Congressman Williams!

SAS Robotics Team Teaches CSAS MS Atoms about the Program

Robotics Students at Syracuse Academy of Science Visit Citizenship & Science Academy of Science MS Students

Wednesday, March 29th, 2023: The Syracuse Academy of Science High School Robotics team visited Citizenship & Science Academy Charter School to promote robotics, engineering, and STEM events in our community. Team members demonstrated their robot atom and discussed building, designing, and programming a robot.

At the end of the presentation, 6th and 7th graders had the chance to drive the robot! We hope the Robotics Team’s outreach sessions were very informative to the 43 students who attended!

SANY Superintendent, Dr. Hayali Visits Kindergarten Classes

The Science Academies of New York Superintendent Reads to SAS Kindergarteners

Friday, March 10th, 2023: Ms. Negron and Ms. Goyer's Kindergarten B class had a morning visit from the Science Academies of New York Superintendent Dr. Hayali. Dr. Hayali read the book "Skin Like Mine" by Latashia M. Perry to the students and discussed how everyone is different, and that's ok. It's important to love yourself for who you are. Dr. Hayali talked about his background, where he is from, and what he does as the superintendent of our school district. (It's more than just being a "super cool teacher" that "gives the kids cookies!" as some of our scholars stated!) Kindergarten B did a great job listening, raising their hands, and taking turns talking during the visit.

Thank you, Dr. Hayali, for taking the time to read to our Atoms and chat with them!

Yavuz Family Teaches Ms. Peryea's Class About Ramadan

Syracuse Academy of Science 2nd Graders Learn About Islam's Holy Month

Wednesday, March 29th, 2023: The Yavuz family joined Syracuse Academy of Science second graders in Ms. Peryea's class to teach them about Ramadan, the holy month in Islam. Ramadan is observed from March 22nd through April 20th by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. The family shared some of the traditions they have in their house to celebrate Ramadan and the purpose behind them. Their son Mahir read "It's Ramadan, Curious George '' and answered questions from the class. Mrs. Yavuz prepared a beautiful lantern craft for students to complete. They also gave students a Ramadan coloring activity as a parting gift!

We love to learn about other cultures and traditions, and we appreciate our student's family sharing their time with us!

7C Atoms Create 3D Art

Syracuse Academy of Science 7C Class Designs 3D Shapes out of Clay

Monday, March 6th, 2023: Syracuse Academy of Science 7C class channeled their inner artist for a clay project! Students chose either a project posted to their Google classroom or their own design. After problem-solving how they would create their art, they started sculpting with air-dry clay (along with traditional clay techniques such as slip and score, slabs, coils, etc.) to create various 3D art pieces.

Please see our Facebook post for more photos of the masterpieces.
