What do Rosa Parks, Origami and Beyoncé Have in Common? The Middle School Science and Academic Fair!
On Friday, March 1, 2019, the #SASCS Middle School held its 2nd Annual Science and Academic Fair. Under the direction of science teachers Mr. Carter and Miss Chapman, students presented results of extensive research on diverse scientific and biographic projects. Student work on salt-water purification, Egyptian hieratic numerals, the mathematics of origami, and the lives of NASA astronaut Mae Jemison, Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dalí and inventor Thomas Edison enlightened all who attended--from parents to students and school staff. Terra Science recognized outstanding student efforts and accomplishments in an awards ceremony that concluded the fair.
On Thursday, February 28, 2019, #SASCS High School held a career fair. We believe seeing is believing, so we asked working professionals from over twenty industries to visit our school and share their experiences with our students. These visits help expand our students' understanding of the types of careers they could pursue. Which in turn helps our educators demonstrate how the concepts they are teaching in class could apply to potential career paths. Thank you to our guidance team for pulling this event together, and to all the working professionals for donating your time to this event. Together, we are building success one ATOM at a time.
On Thursday, February 28, 2019, the students of Mrs. Wolff’s classroom were the first #SASCS class to test the Minecraft for Education program for our school. This popular gaming platform integrates lessons in computer coding, math, and the visual arts into the curriculum. Infusing our classrooms with modern technologies advances our never-ending commitment to delivering a 21st-century education to students at the Syracuse Academy of Science. Go ATOMS! #SASAtoms #SASCS
Paying special tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr., the SHEHOOP club invited all high school students to take time out of their History or Social Studies classes for an opportunity to sign their names on posters displaying favorite quotes by the inspirational American leader. The signed posters will remain on display and continue to inspire students and visitors by reminding us of the importance of honoring Martin Luther King, Jr., and his efforts to promote compassion and equality for all.

On Thursday, February 7, 2019, sportsmanship and positivity were primary goals for third and fourth graders who recently visited the Ultimate Goal family sports center in Marcellus, NY. Led by coaches, students worked together in teams to complete group activities. One of the favorites was tug-of-war, along with kickball and dodgeball. Diverse athletic activities gave students opportunities to problem solve, practice effective communication skills, and develop a wide range of gross motor skills while enjoying physical exercise. Students and staff agree, it was an exhilarating experience--and a great way to beat the mid-winter blues.
On Wednesday, January 30, 2019, when Honorable Judge Derrek Thomas from Syracuse City Court came to #SASCS Middle School, the community leader spoke to Miss Bittel's 6th grade class about how hard work, dedication, and goal-setting can drive success. He shared examples of his own achievements through personal stories, emphasizing the importance of education. He sent a strong message to the students about the benefits of surrounding themselves with positive peers who make positive choices. Introducing our #SASAtoms to community role models is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time!
