Thursday, June 13, 2019—Atoms are poets and they didn't even know it! Stepping outside their comfort zone, these young poets stepped up to the microphone and presented their creative writing to not only their teachers but their parents, and peers, as well. Poems included styles such as haikus, cinquains, acrostic poems and many different uses of figurative language. Great job Atoms!

In between innings, Atoms were able to compete in on-field activities for a chance to win prizes. One student was fortunate enough to even catch a foul ball. Thank you, Syracuse Mets for such a memorable event!

Friday, May 17, 2019—Girls Empowerment Night is a time honored middle school tradition which focuses on developing strong, independent, confident young ladies at Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School. The theme for 2019 was strong, independent women in fields that have been thought of as 'male dominated' professions. Atoms welcomed four guest speakers to sit on a panel and discuss how strength, encouragement, determination and value are key components in being a successful female in any career. Guest speakers included: Spectrum News Meteorologist Vanessa Richards, United States Air Force Takeya Williams, CPS and Government Case worker Heather Douglass, and School Resource Officer and Detective Tina Black. Following the discussion Atoms enjoyed an evening of jewelry making, dance battles, open gym and a movie room.

The 5th grade Atoms visit Skä•noñh - Great Law of Peace Center for a social studies field trip. Students were able to learn about the history and culture of the native peoples of Central New York. Thursday, June 6, 2019—The gym was filled with the sound of music ranging from vocal to instrumental, as Atoms celebrated a night of the fine arts. A favorite event amongst families, the spring concert and art show highlight art related events the Atoms have been working on throughout the year. This year's theme was the American Musical Theater, and it included compilations of many recognizable pieces. The concert finale was a tune from a musical classic, 'So Long, Farewell,' from Roger and Hammerstein's The Sound of Music. Our young and talented Atoms performed this number in both German and French. Following the performances families walked through rows of student artwork, posed in the photo booth, created a picture on the large mural and also wrote fan letters. Thank you to all who helped make this such a special night.
Wednesday, May 22, 2019—Building success, one Atom at a time. One way Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School achieves this is through our mentoring program. Each year, elementary and high school students team up, and the results are inspiring … and successful. Our elementary students look up to our high school students as role models. Throughout the year, students form great bonds and they look forward to working together next school year.
Wednesday, June 5, 2019—What a gorgeous day not only for a field trip, but for baseball and 'Education Day,' as well. The 4th grade Atoms visit Onondaga County Park's NBT Bank Stadium, the home of the Syracuse Mets, for an afternoon filled with popcorn, hot dogs and of course baseball. The Atoms had a 'homerun' of a good time. From singing along to Take Me Out to The Ball Game, to trying to catch a baseball or t-shirt, this field trip was one that will certainly go down in the record books as a win.
