Atoms Make the MOST of their Wednesday Before Break

On Wednesday, April 10, 2019, First Graders at our elementary school spent the day checking out the awesome STEM exhibits at The MOST downtown. They had a chance to rock climb, dig for fossils, watch a movie about the Amazon on the only domed IMAX theater in NY State, and enjoy the humongous interactive science playhouse! Integrating hands-on Science and Technology into our curriculum is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time!

Turkish Language Competition

On Friday, April 5, 2019, SASCS high school hosted its first Turkish Language Competition. Students from Turkish I classes from SASCS and UASCS competed to demonstrate their Turkish Language knowledge. Both teams made tremendous efforts and were excited to show their skills and talents. Students from SASCS finished the competition in first place, with 25 more points than students from UASCS. As a SANY family, we congratulate all the students who participated and their teachers. Student Art on Display at Beaver Lake Nature Center

On Sunday, April 7, 2019, students in third-grade took time to learn about artist Georgia O'Keeffe and her representation of flowers. To create a line drawing, they explored various flower-reference photos and experimented with the use of oil pastels to add color and detail to their flowers. The New York State Art Teachers Association, Region 3 currently is hosting a month-long celebration of elementary-level student artwork at Beaver Lake Nature Center. Five students were selected to have their work shown in the celebration, along with 105 students from 20 different schools from 13 area school districts. The artwork will be on display during business hours at Beaver Lake Nature Center until April 29.

Fourth-Grade Gets a New Perspective on Rights

On Thursday, Aprill 4, 2019, 4th graders from the Syracuse Academy of Science visited the National Women's Rights Museum in Seneca Falls, NY. Students were able to connect their learning from our novel study, The Hope Chest, to historical facts that happened right in our state. We learned about the Declaration of Sentiments and the great lengths women and men went to so that we can vote, dress how we choose, go to college, and choose our careers. The museum offers a variety of exhibits that gave us a new perspective on the rights and privileges we have today. As Elizabeth Cady Stanton said, "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal."

Atoms Earn Second Place at the CNY Innovation Challenge

On Saturday, March 30, 2019, the #SASCS Middle School STEM club participated in the 2019 CNY Innovation Challenge at Onondaga Community College. The Innovative Challenge aims to spark ideas and foster entrepreneurship. Our Atoms developed an idea to help eliminate plastic and cardboard waste from our schools. They conceptualized a drink machine that could be used in place of milk cartons and plastic bottles. The design of the machine was to utilize the lunch pin system by having students input their pin number into the machine and have the machine dispense the student’s drink into a biodegradable cup. The STEM team, Molles, took 2nd place in this year's challenge. Way to go, Atoms!
