Fourth Grade Skates the Morning Away

 
On Monday, December 10, 2018, fourth graders from #SASCS skated the morning away at the Meachem Ice Rink. Students enjoyed helping each other stand up, skate, and eventually glide. Our educators used this trip as an opportunity for team building exercises. At the end of the day the biggest question on our #SASAtomsminds... "When can we go again?!" Promoting team building through collaborative physical activity is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.
 

Internship Opportunity at Zoo for #SASAtoms

On Thursday, December 6, 2018, a representative from the Rosamond Gifford Zoo visited #SASCS to discuss their paid guide internship program. #SASAtoms over 16 are encouraged to apply. Deadline is January 11. Connecting our students with internship opportunities is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Art Class With a Twist

On Wednesday, December 5, 2018, first grade #SASAtoms created winter masterpieces at Painting with a Twist. Students learned how to blend two paints to design a different color, worked with their hands, and were ultimately very proud of their reindeer creations. Integrating the arts into our classrooms encourages creative thinking that builds students’ abilities and reasoning processes and is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Lesson in Justice from Onondaga County Sheriff Eugene Conway

 
On Thursday, December 7, 2018, Onondaga County Sheriff, Eugene J. Conway, paid a visit to #SASCS to speak with #SASAtoms currently enrolled in the Street Law course.
 
Mr. Dwyer's Street Law course shows students the rules of law in the United States. It provides an introduction to the law and the legal system, criminal law and juvenile justice, torts, consumer and housing law, family law, Individual rights, and liberties. Sheriff Conway discussed his experiences with students and described the realities of a career path in law enforcement. #SASAtoms discussed how social media impact his police work, what misconceptions they may have from TV and movies, and general life questions with Sheriff Conway.

Celebrating Citizenship at the November Student of the Month Ceremony

On Tuesday, December 4, 2018, staff at the #SASCS middle school celebrated our November Middle School Student of the Month Award Winners. ?Students were selected for demonstrating the character strength of citizenship. #SASCS defines good citizens as people who are engaged, in big or small ways, in considering the needs of others in their community. We are so proud of you, #SASAtoms! Recognizing our scholars for their achievements is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Gathering in Peace with the Wacheva Dance and Drum Studio

 
Did you know that the name of the traditional Djembe drum comes from the saying "Anke djé, anke bé" which translates to "everyone gather together in peace" Our #SASAtoms gathered together in peace with the Wacheva Dance and Drum Studio CNY to participate in an African Drumming and Dancing workshop.
 
#SASAtoms rotated through centers where they learned different beats on the djembe drum, listened to the dundun drum and singing, learned a cultural dance from the Ivory Coast. Expanding students knowledge of the world by learning about diverse cultures is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.
 

First Grade Learns About the Love of Reading with Maxwell Program Director

On Thursday, November 29, 2018, the Director of National Security Studies at the Maxwell School, Bill Smullen, came to read to our first grade #SASAtoms. Smullen was joined by friend and colleague Susan Virgil. Together they read the book Llama Llama Loves to Read, and talked to the students about the importance of reading and how a book can be your best friend. Thank you, Mr. Smullen and Mrs. Virgil, for dedicating your time and sending such a powerful message to our children. The donation of this book will be a wonderful asset to our library, and one that the students will enjoy for years to come.

#SASCS Fifth Grade Class Project at Azteca Mexican Restaurant

On Wednesday, November 28, 2018, ten of our #SASAtom fifth graders escaped the snowy weather for a few hours and enjoyed a field trip to Azteca Mexican Restaurant. ten of our #SASAtom fifth graders escaped the snowy weather for a few hours and enjoyed a field trip to Azteca Mexican Restaurant. #SASAtoms sampled dishes ranging from guacamole to burritos to flautas. They enjoyed being to able to do research for their Mexican cookbook project. Students discussed ingredients, popular dishes, and different tastes discovered in their meals. Providing our students with hands-on experiences relating to coursework is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

First Teen Center Night at #SASCS Middle School

On Thursday, November 29, 2018, #SASCS Middle School hosted their first Teen Center Night of the school year. #SASAtoms spent the evening playing basketball, soccer, video games, watching a movie, or just hanging out. Donations from the event will be provided to families in need within our community. Creating a safe space for our #SASAtoms to relax with their peers is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.
