Syracuse Academy of Science is sad to report that a member of its night cleaning crew passed away on the night of January 6, 2025. School employees found him in the cafeteria early the next morning. School officials immediately contacted emergency responders. While emergency responders were in the cafeteria, their equipment detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide, which was traced to a piece of cooking equipment, which has since been removed from service. Carbon monoxide levels returned to normal when the equipment was removed from service.
It appears that the elevated carbon monoxide levels caused by the kitchen equipment and the individual’s death are unrelated.
The School administration wishes to assure the public that the School’s facilities are equipped with appropriate carbon monoxide detectors as required by the code. The City Fire Department regularly inspects the School’s fire and carbon monoxide detection systems. The School is cooperating with the investigations into this matter.
The deceased employee was a valued member of the School team for over three years. He was a very hard worker and will be deeply missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.
The School will provide additional information as it becomes available. We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our staff and students. Counselors will be available to any students and staff in need during this extremely difficult time.
