Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
We submitted a response last Friday, January 10, 2024, to address the corrective actions requested by the Syracuse Fire Department and Syracuse City Division of Code Enforcement. They confirmed that they received our response and have been reviewing our submission.
Instruction will remain online until we can ascertain a safe date to reopen the building. Students in grades 8-12 are receiving asynchronous online instruction. In this learning model, teachers post assignments in Google Classrooms and students complete the work by the assigned due date. Each teacher has online hours to support student learning throughout this instructional period. Students are encouraged to log in and get academic support from our instructional staff. All students are required to sign in for attendance by using the Google form that was emailed to them.
If your child needs access to a computer or charger, please email
The School will provide additional information as it becomes available. We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our staff and students. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we navigate these difficult circumstances together.
Sincerely,
SAS High School Administration

Dear SANY Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
We want to inform you about the passing of a Syracuse Academy of Science High School employee. One of our evening cleaners was found deceased on the morning of Tuesday, January 7, 2025. When officials arrived at the school, they found high levels of carbon monoxide in the cafeteria. At this time, our employee's cause of death has not been determined. While there have been many articles posted in the news, we want to assure you of the following:
- No students were exposed to carbon monoxide. The building was immediately cleared, and we exercised the emergency dismissal protocols.
- The source of the carbon monoxide was identified as a faulty food warmer and removed from service.
- The SAS High School building passed the required fire inspection at the end of November 2024.
- Although there are no known issues, and all our buildings passed fire inspections, our operations teams are working with the contractors to check all equipment and safety systems across all schools.
The deceased employee was a valued member of the School team for over three years. He was a very hard worker and will be deeply missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.
We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our staff and students. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we navigate these difficult circumstances together.

School District Clarifies Incident Involving Carbon Monoxide Levels and Safety Protocols
In response to recent inquiries concerning an incident at the Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School High School Building and additional investigation, the district wishes to clarify the situation and address the concerns raised regarding carbon monoxide (CO) safety measures in place within our facilities.
Based on a preliminary investigation that used security camera footage, initial findings indicate that the recent death of a member of the night cleaning crew and the recent identification of elevated carbon monoxide levels in the school's kitchen area are unrelated. This conclusion is premised on a thorough review of security video and on-site investigations by the responding authorities. We await a full report, which will be made public upon receipt.
Further inquiries have raised concerns about the school's carbon monoxide detection capabilities, specifically in the cafeteria area. To clarify, the school district maintains strict compliance with all safety regulations, as confirmed by regular inspections conducted by the Syracuse City Fire Department. These inspections verify that our buildings have the necessary safety devices, including carbon monoxide detectors. The system had not been modified in any way after the last of these inspections.
However, after the recent incident, a detailed inspection revealed that a device in the cafeteria, previously thought to be a smoke and carbon monoxide detector, was actually just a smoke detector. In response, we have promptly initiated extensive re-inspections of all kitchen equipment and safety devices throughout our facilities to ensure they meet all safety standards and regulations. These thorough inspections are being carried out with the City’s Division of Code Enforcement and the School’s contractors.
The district is diligently working with its relevant contractors to promptly complete this review and implement any resulting recommendations. We are dedicated to maintaining transparency with our community and will continue to provide updates on our progress.
Yesterday, five adults were transported to the hospital for examination and monitoring. All of these individuals were released on the same day.
To ensure that our high school students continue their education during this time, we are conducting asynchronous online learning sessions on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
The safety and well-being of our students and staff are paramount. We are committed to transparency and keeping the community informed. We will provide regular updates on our progress as we continue with the necessary safety checks.
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
Syracuse Academy of Science is sad to report that a member of its night cleaning crew passed away on the night of January 6, 2025. School employees found him in the cafeteria early the next morning. School officials immediately contacted emergency responders. While emergency responders were in the cafeteria, their equipment detected elevated levels of carbon monoxide, which was traced to a piece of cooking equipment, which has since been removed from service. Carbon monoxide levels returned to normal when the equipment was removed from service.
It appears that the elevated carbon monoxide levels caused by the kitchen equipment and the individual's death are unrelated.
The School administration wishes to assure the public that the School's facilities are equipped with appropriate carbon monoxide detectors as required by the code. The City Fire Department regularly inspects the School's fire and carbon monoxide detection systems. The School is cooperating with the investigations into this matter.
The deceased employee was a valued member of the School team for over three years. He was a very hard worker and will be deeply missed. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and loved ones.
The School will provide additional information as it becomes available. We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our staff and students. Counselors will be available to any students and staff in need during this extremely difficult time.
As communicated in the previous robocall, we will conduct asynchronous online sessions for our high school students on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, to allow them to continue learning from home.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we navigate these difficult circumstances together.
Sincerely,
SAS High School Administration
Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
The safety and well-being of our students and staff are always our top priorities at Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School. This morning, due to an incident at the high school, we have made the decision to dismiss all students early as a precautionary measure.
We issued an emergency dismissal this morning. Centro buses will pick up the students after 9 a.m. Students from districts other than Syracuse City School District should be picked up by their parents or guardians as soon as possible. In the meantime, students have been relocated to the district office to ensure their safety until they are picked up.
Please rest assured that our administration team is actively reviewing safety protocols and preventative measures to maintain a secure environment. We remain committed to providing a safe, positive, and productive learning experience for all students.
We will provide more information as it becomes available. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this time.
Sincerely,
SAS High School Administration
We can confirm that the Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School High School Building will be closed tomorrow due to the recent carbon monoxide incident. To ensure that our high school students continue their education during this time, we will be conducting asynchronous online learning sessions on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
In response to the incident, we are thoroughly re-inspecting all kitchen equipment and devices to ensure there is no danger to our students and staff. These checks are being conducted to comply fully with the Division of Code Enforcement's requirements.
We are actively working with the relevant companies to diligently and promptly complete the necessary safety checks. We are dedicated to maintaining transparency with our community and will continue to provide updates on our progress.
Thank you for your understanding and support during this time.
Our night cleaning staff typically begins their shift after student dismissal at around 4 PM. They work approximately five hours, clocking out after completing the cleaning of their designated areas.
We want to assure the public that our building, including the cafeteria, is equipped with CO detectors, and the Syracuse City Fire Department conducts fire safety inspections periodically. The CO detector that students reported making a chirping sound yesterday was located in a separate part of the building. This was due to a low battery, which was replaced. No other alarms were detected from other CO detectors in the building.
Based on the preliminary investigation by the fire and police departments, these two incidents do not appear to be related. The official cause of death will be determined following the results of the autopsy.
The deceased employee had been a valued member of our team for over three years. We will provide further information as it becomes available. We are committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all our staff and students.
