Tuesday, October 11th, 2022: Take a peek inside Ms. A-B's Kindergarten Art Class! Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School Kindergarteners did some painting and learned that two overlapping colors make a new color. For this lesson, students were shown how red and yellow polka dots overlap to make orange! These atoms had fun experimenting with paint to create their masterpieces!
Please check out our Facebook Page for more pictures from class.
Saturday, October 15th, 2022: The Syracuse Academy of Science Robotics team did it again! Five teams competed in the CNY Steamboat Challenge tournament presented by the MOST. For this competition, students had to design and construct a miniature working steamboat powered by a single tealight candle. Teams were judged based on five categories: fastest race time, boat design, STEM knowledge, creativity, and teamwork.
Syracuse Academy of Science had one group of middle schoolers in division 2 and received second place. The other teams were made up of high schoolers in division 3 and received first, second, third, and fourth place.

It's time to shine the spotlight on one of our outstanding teachers! Mr. Metz is a teacher at Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary school. He is originally from Ilion, New York. He graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a BA in History and Theatre and an MST in Childhood Education.
Mr. Metz has been teaching in various roles for almost a decade. He has lived and worked in both New York and North Carolina. Theatre and sports are some of his favorite pastimes. He works a second job with the Syracuse Mets and is involved in Community Theatre. Mr. Metz enjoys attending SU Basketball and Football games and Syracuse Crunch Hockey. He is a fan of Disney and will never say no to a slice of pizza. His mom and dad most inspire Mr. Metz, and he must like to give positive feedback because his most used emoji is the thumbs-up emoji!
This is Mr. Metz's first year with Syracuse Elementary, and we couldn't be happier to have him on our team. Thank you for all you do day in and day out, Mr. Metz!
Friday, September 30th, 2022: Syracuse Academy of Science 4th-grade students experienced life outside the classroom! These adventurous Atoms explored Beaver Lake Nature Center in Baldwinsville. Students took guided tours of the bog and woods and learned about different species of trees and animals that live in the environment, and they even got to see some cranberries growing! As these students had just wrapped up their ecology unit, they asked some very informed questions and were able to apply what they learned to a real-world environment.
What do you get if you divide the circumference of a pumpkin by its diameter? A pumpkin pi!
On Monday, October 3rd, Syracuse Academy of Science first graders didn't make any pumpkin pie, but they did get to visit Tim's Pumpkin patch. The farm in Marietta is a fall staple for families here in Central New York. Students took a tractor wagon ride, picked pumpkins, and enjoyed delicious cider and donuts.
It was a gourd-tastic way to kick off October!
Thursday October 6th, 2022: Twelve exceptional 4th graders were selected to share a special breakfast with our SANY Superintendent, Dr. Tolga Hayali. Students joined Dr. Hayali and Dean, Mrs. Miller, in the cafeteria for waffles, turkey bacon, fresh fruit, milk, and juice. Dr. Hayali and our 4th graders discussed why they were chosen to represent their grade, their goals for the future, and what they would change in our school if they were the principal. Students were excited to be selected, and Dr. Hayali enjoyed spending time with these Atoms.
Thursday, October 6th, 2022: 13 Syracuse Academy of Science High School students were honored at a ceremony as they received congressional awards. These students have been participating in The Congressional Awards program since October 2021. Every Saturday, Mr. Yaman and Mr. Turgay’s students set aside a portion of their day to work on their Congressional Award requirements. On top of the hours they spend on their personal development and physical fitness, they serve their community and earn community service hours by volunteering their time at the Thrifty Shopper store in East Syracuse.
These students visited multiple cities throughout their journeys, such as Boston, NYC, and Washington, DC. They camped in the Adirondacks, exploring their country by meeting the Congressional Award Expedition/Exploration requirement.
Hard work pays off, and we are so proud of our scholars for meeting their goals and receiving this high honor from the United States Congress. Congratulations, Atoms!
Friday, September 30th, 2022: All three kindergarten classes enjoyed their first walking field trip to Syracuse fire station 18. During the field trip, students learned about fire safety and how to keep each other and themselves safe from harm. While we were there, students enjoyed watching the firefighters come down the fire pole, suit up in their protective gear, and they even got to sit in the fire truck! Our Atoms had a great time and couldn’t wait to share what they learned with their families!
Thank you, Station 18, for taking the time to have us visit!
Friday September 30th, 2022: “A library card is a start of a lifelong adventure.” Ms. Fogarty’s second-grade class got the opportunity to explore the nearby library. Students and some parents walked to Betts Branch Library, where they learned about all the materials available at the local library. Students then read several books to one another and enjoyed read-alouds.
Thursday, September 29th, 2022: It's hard to believe it's already October! It feels like the first day of school was just yesterday! Syracuse Academy of Science High School held their Back to School Night for families on Thursday, September, 29th.
At check-in, students received a sign-in sheet to ensure they were introducing their families to their core class and elective teachers. Families and students could walk freely throughout the first floor of the building to visit classrooms and meet grade-level teacher teams. Teachers handed out information about the course, and parents were able to schedule parent-teacher conferences or home visits to discuss their student's progress in more detail.
We hope Back to School night was a positive and helpful experience for all who attended. We're looking forward to the rest of the school year and building success one Atom at a time.
