Friday, February 12th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science is excited to share that two of its elementary school Atoms’ artwork has been selected to be displayed at the 2021 virtual Legislative Art Show. Congratulations to 1st grade student, Daniel Allen and 4th grade student Amelia Destitio for having their pieces selected. Daniel’s piece is titled ‘Scribble Monster’ and Amelia’s piece is titled, ‘Symmetrical Crayon Rubbing. Both students will have their artwork displayed in the spring at the Legislative Office Building in Albany, New York. 

The Legislative Art Show is a 31 year tradition by the New York State Art Teachers Association. Congratulations to Daniel and Amelia, and for art teacher Ms. Alonso-Bergevin for making this possible! 

Thursday, February 4th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school kicks-off Black History Month with virtual guest speaker, Detective Terell. Detective Terell spoke with the Atoms about why he chose to become a detective in the city of Syracuse, read a short story called, Hair Love, and created a mini detective lesson. In the mini detective lesson, Atoms were tasked with following the clues with Detective Terell’s help to solve the puzzle! I think we might have some sleuths on our hands. Thank you Detective Terell for taking the time to speak with the Atoms and sharing why you wanted to become a detective in the city of Syracuse, and for the fun hands-on detective lesson!

Friday, February 12th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science high school had an opportunity to virtually interview building substitute teacher, Mr. Bility who has one incredible story you certainly don’t want to miss. One of nine children, Mr. Bility is a first-generation college graduate and immigrant. He also is a co-head boys soccer coach with his twin brother. • What three traits define you? Hard working, Energetic, Enthusiastic.
• What is your greatest accomplishment? Being a first generation immigrant to obtain a college degree in my family.
• Best book you have ever read? Walk Towards The Rising Sun by Ger Duany.
• What is one thing you cannot resist?(food/dessert/candy/etc.) My mom's cooking.
• If you could have dinner with one person living or dead who would they be and why? My grandfather. He taught me everything I know about the importance of family.
• What advice would you give to kids who are struggling at school? I will tell them to reach out to their teachers and classmates. "It takes a village to raise a child," and the same goes for education. We must seek help from each other.
• Tell us, what is something that might surprise us about you? My twin brother and I are the number 8 of the 9 kids my mom had. All born and raised in Africa.

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2021—We all know that Syracuse Academy of Science middle school Atoms are hard workers, but did you know that they are pretty groovy too?! Congratulations to 5th grade student, Jaquarie for receiving this custom tie-dye design t-shirt from Ms. Brett’s art class for all of his hard work, amazing effort and perfect attendance in all of his Zoom classes. Thursday, February 4th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science middle school Project Based Learning (PBL) students are giving back to their community, one Blessing Box at a time. For their project, Atoms were tasked with pitching their Blessing Box idea to the Sovereign Grace Baptist Church, the location where the winning team’s Blessing Box will be housed. In their presentation, the team of students were tasked with sharing what their box would look like, the contents that would be inside the box and how their box would benefit the community. Congratulations to the winning team, Samara H. Zaleya D. and Enas M. who will construct their box later this year.

This week for our Senior Spotlight, we shine the light on this future entrepreneur, Anadya Hill. • What is one major accomplishment you had in your senior year of high school? Passed my college classes.
• What are your goals for after high school? Graduating from basic training and successfully owning my own business.
• Name one person that inspires you? My mom (Samantha)
• What advice would you give to the next senior class? Keep your head up, don’t give up, and put your mind to whatever you put your mind to.
• Where do you see yourself in five years? Owning my own car and house and married.
• If you could have dinner with any person living or dead who would they be and why? The Obama family and Kobe Bryant.
• Name three traits that describe you? Smart, successful and blessed.
• What is your favorite hobby? I like to read from time to time, and make TikTok videos.
• What is a hidden talent that no one or only a few people know about you? I can do hair.
• What is your favorite memory of SAS? The pep rally and college visits.

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2021—Earlier this week, the Syracuse Academy of Science Atoms were greeted early in the morning by the sweet sound of a ‘SNOW DAY!’ The students took a pause from remote learning and enjoyed the winter wonderland (and feet of snow) with their families and helping neighbors and those in need with snow removal. Stay warm Atoms and keep up the great work.

Friday, January 29th, 2021—As January came to a close, Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school hosted its virtual January Student of the Month ceremony.
