Friday, May 2nd, 2025: Each year, the first Friday in May marks School Lunch Hero Day—a time to recognize the dedication and care of the incredible individuals who fuel our students' days with nutritious meals and warm smiles.
At Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School, our students showed their appreciation in a creative and heartfelt way. During Art Class, they worked together to design and sign a special poster in honor of our cafeteria team—the true heroes behind the scenes who make a difference every day.
Our food service team plays a vital role in our school community, from serving balanced meals to fostering a welcoming cafeteria environment. Thank you for everything you do to keep our scholars nourished, energized, and ready to learn!
Happy School Lunch Hero Day!

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025: Mrs. Swidowski’s fifth-grade science class at Syracuse Academy of Science became a team of scientists and detectives during an exciting hands-on lab called “What’s in the Bag?”
Students used their observation skills to investigate what happens when a mystery substance is added to water. As they watched the mixture react and change, they made predictions, took detailed notes, and discussed their findings with classmates.
Like real scientists, Atoms collected and analyzed data to form solid conclusions about the new substance they created. This engaging lab allowed students to explore chemical reactions while building critical thinking and teamwork skills.
Great job, young scientists! Keep exploring, questioning, and discovering!

Tuesday, April 29th, 2025: On a recent visit to Syracuse Academy of Science, high school students had the opportunity to hear directly from two members of the Syracuse Police Department: Sergeant Dallas Pelz and Officer Shaquille Muhammad, a proud SAS alum.
The visit was more than just a presentation. It was a meaningful conversation about public service, perseverance, and the impact of education. Officer Muhammad shared his journey from an SAS student to a law enforcement officer, offering a powerful example of how dedication and hard work in high school can shape a prosperous future.
Sergeant Pelz and Officer Muhammad explained what it takes to become a police officer, discussed the challenges and rewards of protecting and serving the community, and emphasized the importance of integrity and commitment. They also encouraged students to stay focused on their goals and to take their education seriously, as it forms the foundation for every career path.
The visit left a lasting impression on our Atoms, who were inspired by the officers' real-life stories and relatable advice.
Thank you, Sergeant Pelz and Officer Muhammad, for giving your time, sharing your experiences, and showing our students what it means to lead with purpose and pride.

Thursday, April 10th, 2025: Second-grade students at Syracuse Academy of Science received a special visit from SKS Orthodontics as part of an ongoing effort to promote health and wellness in the classroom.
During the visit, representatives from SKS Orthodontics led an interactive presentation on the importance of oral hygiene. Students learned proper brushing and flossing techniques and how healthy eating habits contribute to strong teeth and overall wellness. The team also answered student questions and shared helpful tips to brighten smiles.
To wrap up the visit, each student received a complimentary toothbrush — a perfect reminder to put their new knowledge into practice at home.
Thank you to SKS Orthodontics for empowering our young Atoms with the tools and knowledge they need to build lifelong healthy habits!

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025: At Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School, Earth Day wasn’t just a day — it was a whole week of excitement, learning, and celebration!
Throughout the week, our students participated in several activities highlighting the importance of caring for our planet. We were thrilled to welcome an Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency representative, who gave an engaging presentation about recycling and sustainability. Our students learned practical ways they can make a positive impact on the environment every day.
Adding to the celebration, Ms. Jennifer from the Betts Branch Library visited some of our classrooms to share Earth Day-themed books.
A huge thank you to our special guests and everyone who helped make Earth Week a success! Our Atoms had a blast learning, exploring, and growing into thoughtful stewards of the environment.

Friday, March 21st, 2025: While we might not have seen lions, tigers, or bears, our Syracuse Academy of Science first graders embarked on an equally thrilling adventure! The Atoms visited Little Ray's Nature Center at Destiny USA, where they got up close and personal with real reptiles and other fascinating creatures.
The day was filled with hands-on learning and excitement as the students explored exhibits featuring snakes, lizards, bugs, and spiders. This crowd-favorite field trip offered them a unique opportunity to discover the wonders of the animal kingdom, sparking curiosity and inspiring a deeper appreciation for nature.
Stay tuned for more adventures!

Thursday, April 10th, 2025: Students in Mrs. Swidowski’s fifth-grade Syracuse Academy of Science class took on an electrifying challenge during their State Investigation Lab! With a table full of wires, batteries, switches, and light bulbs, students were tasked with building functioning circuits—and lighting up those bulbs!
Throughout the lab, students explored how electricity flows through a circuit and investigated what happens when the switch is open versus when it’s closed. Using their growing knowledge of electrical systems, they collaborated, problem-solved, and tested their designs until they were successful.
This hands-on experience brought textbook science to life, encouraging critical thinking and curiosity about how everyday electrical systems work. It was a bright moment—literally and figuratively—for our young scientists!
We’re so proud of their hard work and perseverance. Way to go, 5th grade!

Saturday, April 5th, 2025: The Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School STEAM Club has been busy exploring, creating, and learning during their recent Saturday sessions at The MOST!
Our Atoms participated in hands-on learning experiences at the Future Women in STEM event with Cornell Cooperative Extension and NewsChannel 9. Students explored weather and erosion, created their own “storm in a jar,” and examined how various soil types react to precipitation.
The learning didn’t stop there! During the Future Innovators program, students launched into rocket science by designing and building paper and straw rockets. They tested their designs for distance and accuracy, and the results were out of this world!
A special shoutout goes to JaVahe for achieving the longest flight and Kelaya for the most accurate rocket—she even landed hers in a bucket!
We are so proud of our STEAM scholars for embracing science, technology, engineering, art, and math with enthusiasm and creativity.

Saturday, March 15th, 2025: The Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School Atoms Adventure Club kicked off their first Spring 2025 outing with a trip to Beaver Lake! Students and their families joined Ms. Cahalan for a scenic hike around the lake, where they observed wildlife and took in the beauty of the natural world.
This outdoor adventure perfectly supported the club’s mission: cultivating a mindful connection between nature and well-being. By unplugging and spending time in nature, students could reflect, recharge, and appreciate the world around them.
Thank you, Ms. Cahalan, for inspiring our Atoms to be one with nature and promoting the importance of mental and physical wellness through outdoor exploration.

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2025: An inspiring day of discovery, learning, and envisioning the future!
Several Syracuse Academy of Science High School students joined Mr. Kovar and Mr. Aslan on a college visit to Alfred University. This campus tour allowed our Atoms to explore academic buildings, engage with the university environment, and experience college life.
The visit was filled with valuable insights and meaningful moments, from walking through lecture halls to learning more about academic programs and student life. For many students, it was an inspiring experience that helped them envision their futures beyond high school and better understand the paths available to them.
At SAS, we are committed to exposing our students to higher education opportunities and encouraging them to set ambitious goals. This visit to Alfred University is just one of the many ways we help prepare our Atoms for college, career, and beyond.
We’re so proud of our students for taking this step toward their future—and grateful to Alfred University for the warm welcome!
