Musical Month of December at #SASCS High School

At #SASCS we understand and respect the value of the arts as a key component to a well-rounded education. Ms. Carlson, our high school music educator, has focused on integrating music experiences into students everyday lives. This winter #SASAtoms in her course experienced the Nutcracker performed by the Syracuse City Ballet. Students in the guitar class strummed their instruments alongside renowned Syracuse University Professor Dr. Ken Meyer and his students. The #SASCS Choir collaborated with the Christian Brothers Academy Choir for a winter concert at the Everson Museum. Thank you, Ms. Carlson, for facilitating these events. Providing our students with opportunities to participate in enriching arts experiences is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Art Club Reflects at the Everson

On Friday, December 7, 2018, the #SASCS High School Art Club visited the Everson Museum of Art for a docent-led tour. It was a marvelous way for students to familiarize themselves with this museum that is celebrating its 50th year anniversary. The painting says "Everson" can you read it?

Realizing the Gift of Leadership

On Tuesday, December 11, 2018, our fourth-graders received a welcome visit from Pam Brunet, director of Leadership Greater Syracuse. She spoke with our kids about the positive impact the program has on the community, how it matches and links people together to make a difference in their lives, and some of the facilities with which she works. Mrs. Brunet conducted an interactive activity with the students to help them see they each have a special "gift"--a unique attribute they can use to do something nice for another person, to give back what they have received. These Atoms now know--and show--what it means to be a leader!

#SASCS Kindergartners Take a Magical Field Trip

On Friday, December 7, 2018, #SASCS kindergartners went on a field trip to see Dasher's Magical Gift. Students enjoyed watching the performance, and learning about theater while they get excited for the approaching holidays.

Syracuse Police Officers Provide a Lesson in Safety

On Thursday, December 6, 2018, our kindergartners in Ms. Figueroa's class had a visit from two Syracuse City Police Officers. The officers focused on safety and discussed the proper clothing to wear if you're playing outside when it's dark out, how to cross a street, and stranger danger.

Officers read the students the story "We are All Wonders" by R.J. Palacio, and talked to them about the value of being kind to everyone, and celebrating one another's differences. Building positive relationships with community figures is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Food Bank of CNY Visits #SASCS

On Friday, December 7th, Heidi Soine from Syracuse's Food Pantry came and spoke to one of our sixth grade classes. Soine talked about where they get their food from and who they help as well as discussed the partnerships the Food Pantry has in surrounding counties. Students presented collected donations from our recent Teen Center Night for the Food Pantry as a way to show support for families in need.

Fourth Grade Skates the Morning Away

On Monday, December 10, 2018, fourth graders from #SASCS skated the morning away at the Meachem Ice Rink. Students enjoyed helping each other stand up, skate, and eventually glide. Our educators used this trip as an opportunity for team building exercises. At the end of the day the biggest question on our #SASAtomsminds... "When can we go again?!" Promoting team building through collaborative physical activity is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Internship Opportunity at Zoo for #SASAtoms

On Thursday, December 6, 2018, a representative from the Rosamond Gifford Zoo visited #SASCS to discuss their paid guide internship program. #SASAtoms over 16 are encouraged to apply. Deadline is January 11. Connecting our students with internship opportunities is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Art Class With a Twist

On Wednesday, December 5, 2018, first grade #SASAtoms created winter masterpieces at Painting with a Twist. Students learned how to blend two paints to design a different color, worked with their hands, and were ultimately very proud of their reindeer creations. Integrating the arts into our classrooms encourages creative thinking that builds students’ abilities and reasoning processes and is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.

Lesson in Justice from Onondaga County Sheriff Eugene Conway

On Thursday, December 7, 2018, Onondaga County Sheriff, Eugene J. Conway, paid a visit to #SASCS to speak with #SASAtoms currently enrolled in the Street Law course.

Mr. Dwyer's Street Law course shows students the rules of law in the United States. It provides an introduction to the law and the legal system, criminal law and juvenile justice, torts, consumer and housing law, family law, Individual rights, and liberties. Sheriff Conway discussed his experiences with students and described the realities of a career path in law enforcement. #SASAtoms discussed how social media impact his police work, what misconceptions they may have from TV and movies, and general life questions with Sheriff Conway.

Introducing our #SASAtoms to community leaders directly related to their studies is just one of the ways we are building success one ATOM at a time.
