Staying Safe This Summer

Monday, June 15, 2020—The Mohawk Valley Frontiers, Jr. Frontiers, and Jr. Frontiers Alumni Impact Coalition would like to invite the SANY student body to be part of a virtual Town Hall meeting that will be educational and possibly a lifesaving event to address relationships between Law Enforcement personnel and students of color. This is a collective effort in conjunction with the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties. The projected date and time are Monday, June 15, 2020, 10:00 – 11:30 am.

With the senseless murder of George Floyd and other recent injustices against Ahmaud Arbery, Christian Cooper, and Breonna Taylor to name a few, this event is considered timely and critical for the safety of our youth given the end of the school year, start of the summer months, and increased frustrations and anger. This virtual event will be facilitated by members of the Frontier Organization and the guest panelists will include Officers of color who are in command and have authority over Law Enforcement personnel.

The purpose of the Town Hall is threefold:
1) To allow children of color to see Black people (people of color) who are in Law Enforcement, let them know that Law Enforcement and its mission can become community friendly with communities of color, and the two can find a way to work for the benefit of the students.
2) To address the fears and frustration of students about being a target for unnecessary police action against them.
3) To have the Officers give tips and advice on how students can conduct themselves when they are stopped or pulled over by Law Enforcement and ultimately get home safe.

Message from SANY Superintendent Dr. Hayali

Dear SANY Family,

On behalf of our grieving school community, I am writing to express my sincere sorrow about the death of George Floyd and the deeply troubling circumstances surrounding his death earlier this week. Videos from eyewitnesses clearly show Mr. Floyd was in custody, handcuffed, and pinned to the ground while a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck. Before he lost consciousness and died, Mr. Floyd was able to say he could not breathe. His wrongful death comes while we still grapple with the death of Breonna Taylor, an unarmed 26-year-old black woman who was shot by police in her apartment, and the death of Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed 25-year-old black man who was shot while jogging in a Georgia suburb.

With families, colleagues, and loved ones, we grieve and stand committed to calling for justice for George, Breonna, and Ahmaud. We speak against the utter absence of humanity in these acts. Hatred, bigotry, and violence against anyone anywhere shatters peace and affects all of us.

As a community, we wish for true peace everywhere, but it can only grow where the evils of racism and ethnic and religious bigotry are rooted out. I encourage you to be unwavering in your dedication to fostering and demanding respect for all. I call on everyone in the SANY family to stand together with renewed vigor to end racism by sowing the seeds of peace every day, everywhere.

Let us unite to build a better future based on peace, justice, and equality for all.

Sincerely,

Tolga Hayali
Superintendent
