Second Graders Enjoy a Field Trip Full of Wonder

On Tuesday, December 19th, 2017, SAS second graders visited WonderWorks at Destiny USA Mall for some hands-on educational fun. At the “amusement park for the mind,” students participated in a variety of activities, games and simulations. They had a great time learning what it feels like to be blown away by hurricane-force winds, maneuver the controls of a NASA spacecraft to land the shuttle, lie on a bed of 3,500 nails, and pilot a fighter jet—all in one place!

State Trooper Visit

On December 15th, 2017, State Trooper Jack Keller came in to talk to the criminal justice class about law enforcement and what troopers do. Drawing from experience, he explained to the students that law enforcement is not an easy job, but it is rewarding. While answering questions from the students, he described some interesting and strange calls he has taken as a Trooper. The engaging dialogue gave students insight into law enforcement and helped them to realize just how demanding and important an officer's job is.

SAS Elementary Students Enjoy a Visit to Hospital Land

During the week of December 3rd, SAS first-graders made a planned visit to Hospital Land at The Marley Center (Crouse Hospital Affiliation). Students had a chance to role play being nurses, care givers and patients, in a gentle approach to introducing hospital services to young children. First-graders also were able to try out a hospital bed and use all sorts of other equipment to experience patient care firsthand. This unique community-service program is designed to lessen fears and confusion of young children who may have to visit a loved one in a hospital or spend time there themselves. Since 1976, Crouse Hospital has provided the educational program to 165,000 first-graders throughout Onondaga County.

12/4/17- Encore Field Trip

On Monday, December 4th, Mr. Panighett and Ms. Herrera took a group of 28 8th graders to see a performance of Encore - a compilation of short stories and poems they had read including, "The Tell Tale Heart," "The Raven," "The Monkey's Paw," "The Necklace, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County," and  "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"- at the Rochester Auditorium. They also went to McDonald's for lunch afterward.  They were wonderful on the bus, they were by far the most well-behaved in the theater, and they even received accolades from several staff members and patrons at the McDonald's. They were, in a word, awesome, and made us very proud.

In turn, those skills help to build self-confidence and foster communication and leadership skills.

Eleven members of the SAS Atoms robotics team attended the competition. The team became the 4th alliance captain and, after semi-finals selections, the 3rd alliance captain. Ultimately, the robotics team received the Rockwell Collins Innovate Award and advanced to the FTC Super Regional Competition, which will be held January 14, 2018, at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Utica.
