Saturday, February 8th, 2025: The Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School STEAM Club had an incredible opportunity to participate in the Future Women in STEM event at The Museum of Science & Technology.
During this hands-on experience, our scholars worked alongside Perimetek Pest Management to explore the field of pest control and environmental science.
Data analysis, where they learned how to track pest activity using scientific methods.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) safety demonstrations highlighted the different types of gear required for various situations. Up-close encounters with various critters and their habitats provide students with a better understanding of pest behavior and environmental impact.
This event gave our students valuable real-world STEM insights, sparking their curiosity and strengthening their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
We are so proud of our future scientists and innovators for their dedication to learning and exploration!
Thursday, January 9th, 2025: As part of College & Career Week, Syracuse Academy of Science second graders had a special visit from two New York State Troopers!
Students learned what it takes to become a trooper, what a typical week on the job looks like, and why following the law is so important. They also shared their dream jobs and asked thoughtful questions about police work!
A huge thank you to our special guests for taking the time to inspire and educate our Atoms.
Stay tuned for more career exploration moments!
Saturday, February 1st, 2025: The Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School STEAM Club embarked on an electrifying journey into energy and innovation with National Grid. This hands-on experience allowed our SAS Atoms to explore career pathways in the energy sector while diving into exciting STEM activities.
National Grid professionals introduced students to the fascinating field of electrical engineering, sharing insights on power distribution, sustainability, and the critical role of energy in our daily lives. Students had the unique chance to get up close with bucket truck equipment, learning about the tools and technology that keep our communities powered.
One of the highlights of the day was the hands-on circuit-building activity. Using circuit kits, students constructed simple and parallel circuits, gaining a deeper understanding of electrical flow and the principles of conductivity. These interactive exercises reinforced classroom learning and inspired students to think creatively about real-world applications of science and technology.
STEAM education thrives on experiential learning, and this event was a perfect example of how industry partnerships can spark curiosity and innovation. Thank you to National Grid for their time, expertise, and commitment to shaping the next generation of engineers and problem solvers!
Friday, January 31st, 2025: Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary School third graders accepted the challenge and tried their hand at the Scripps National Spelling Bee! Eighteen scholars stepped up and spelled their hearts out, going six rounds and finishing with a thrilling showdown between two spellers.
The competition was fierce, with students demonstrating incredible focus and determination. Eventually, a champion emerged, securing victory with the word "Liquid."
A big congratulations to all our spellers for their hard work and perseverance! Way to go, SAS Atoms!
Friday, January 31st, 2025: Syracuse Academy of Science Elementary welcomed News Channel 3’s Megan Coleman to visit our Kindergarteners! She shared insights into the exciting news world, covering weather, sports, and politics. Our young Atoms learned that the news isn’t just local—it can be national and even global!
Megan also asked each student what they want to be when they grow up. Some have their sights set on her job, dreaming of being news reporters! Others aspire to be doctors, teachers, police officers, artists, and even... a dinosaur!
Megan reminded them that they can be anything they dream of with hard work—a message that we wholeheartedly believe at SAS.
We love this annual visit and are grateful to Megan for inspiring our future stars!
