SAS High school senior Amari Williams was accepted to Cornell University.

Syracuse Academy of Science senior Amari Williams was accepted to Cornell University. He applied to 14 colleges in his search. Cornell was his first choice.

During his time at SAS Amari participated in the drama crew and was part of the Science Olympiad instructed by Dr. Ay.

“Amari is a brilliant student who is excellent in both the courses he has taken and the research he has done. – Dr. Ay

Last year Amari was accepted into the Summer Science Immersion Program at SUNY Oswego. The program is held in July and provides students an opportunity to assist undergraduate or graduate students with their research projects. With his research he participated in the Central New York Science and Engineering fair where he won an honor medal. He and his partner were invited to Syracuse University for a research talk.

Amari achieved all of this by staying focused during his studies. His advice to his fellow students is to "try to keep doing better than before. ... It’s important to fix mistakes and overcome hurdles.”

Amari would like to thank Mrs.Brand, Dr. Kocak, Dr. Hayali, Mr. Bak and all the supportive teachers. Throughout his studies, all his teachers have been helpful, especially Mrs. Kubat, whom Amari says was a big help in the process, and Ms. McGinnis, whose AP literature class prepared him to write his college entrance essay.

Amari will major in Industrial Labor Relations with a focus in Business and Finance in the fall. Good luck, Amari!

High School Students Travel to Europe

From April 14-April 20, 10 students from Syracuse Academy of Science High School, through a trip put together by Mr. Yaman and Ms. Bornot, the high school's Turkish and Spanish teachers, traveled to Europe for a cultural immersion trip.  The students, chaperoned by Ms. Rybak, high school social studies teacher, and a couple of parent volunteers, traveled to Amsterdam and Rotterdam in The Netherlands and Paris in France over spring break.  While in The Netherlands, students visited the Cubist Homes of Rotterdam (one of only 2 such structures in the world), Anne Frank House, and a working historical village where they learned about the production of clogs and cheese, 2 major products of the Netherlands, as well as the importance of wind power and windmills to the industry of the area.  The students also explored the city of Amsterdam on the city's canals.  On the first day in Paris, students got to take in the sights of the Sacre Coeur Basilica, the Artist District, and Notre Dame. On day two, visits were made to the Arc de Triomphe, Le Grand Roue (Ferris Wheel), The Louvre, Champs Elysees, and the Eiffel Tower.  Day 3 was spent at Disneyland Paris, checking out the European version of the American classic vacation spot.  Many miles were covered, both on foot and in the air, and the students had an unforgettable spring break immersing themselves in foreign culture.

8th annual LAT Fair

On Thursday April 13th, 2017 The Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School held the 8th annual Liberal Arts and Tunnel Fair. The students worked hard to create boards showing their knowledge on significant individuals in history.

The LAT fair was started at Syracuse Academy of Science in December of 2009. The goal of the fair was have students in the liberal arts display and present projects associated with an annual theme. Since this is a liberal arts fair the teachers from the Social Studies, English, and Art and Music departments collaborate with each other and students to show off their many talents. Each fair has a theme and within that theme students work with their teachers to create projects of many different subjects within the theme to display and present. Themes from the past include turning points, the theme of the 2017 fair significant individual contributions in history.

Preparation for the fair is a multifaceted task that takes many months to prepare for. Once the theme for the fair is decided upon the student will work with teachers on researching their selected topic under the banner of the theme.  Teachers will then take a great deal of time and look through the student’s initial research and choose the very best ones to transfer their information to a display board. Once those students are chosen to present and display their projects teachers work one on one with each student helping them to gain a greater understanding of their project and the best way to present it.  After weeks of research, project board displays and practicing presenting, the students set their projects up in the Gym of the school and present to judges from the community.

Project categories included the following: Significant individuals in Global History, Significant individuals in U.S History, Turning points in Global History, Turning points in U.S. History, Exploration, Encounter and Exchange of the Global and new worlds. In addition students will also presented projects about concerns in the community and their solutions to solve them.
