Friday, March 26th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science high school Atoms Yakina Sika-Amoah and Theodore Simon made headlines this morning for their recent award winning achievements at the MOST’s CNY Science and Engineering Fair held on Sunday, March 21^st. Yakina and Theodore worked to research and develop a robot that would help clean up the coastlines and their hard work and dedication certainly did not go unnoticed.

This morning, Yakina and Theodore were featured on News Channel 9’s Cool Schools segment, as well as, Urban CNY News’ Urban CNY Excellence section. Congratulations to Yakina and Theodore for their award winning project, hard work and dedication. We look forward to having you represent not only Syracuse Academy of Science but Upstate New York, as well at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair.

Friday, March 26th, 2021—Lace up those sneakers and grab a jar of Vegemite, as we get ready to share Syracuse Academy of Science high school’s next Teacher Spotlight. We had the opportunity to virtually interview, high school physical education and health teacher, Mrs. Clark. She shared with us a fun fact that would take us to the land down under, advice she gives to Atoms, as well as, her favorite book of all time, and much more. Interview with Mrs. Clark

• What three traits define you? Caring, Hard working, Persistent.
• What is your greatest accomplishment? It is still a work in progress, but raising my son and daughter to be smart, loving and caring individuals.
• Best book you have ever read? I'm going back to 10th grade English: To Kill a Mockingbird.
• What is one thing you cannot resist?(food/dessert/candy/etc.) Raisinets and Cheesecake!!
• If you could have dinner with one person living or dead who would they be and why? Gwen Stefani. She has been my idol ever since I was a kid. She is unique, strong, has incredible stage presence and just seems like a very chill person to talk to.
• What advice would you give to kids who are struggling at school? Keep your head up. We are all struggling but we need to be there for each other. And reach out if you are having a hard time. We are here to listen and help you get through this challenging time. 
• Tell us, what is something that might surprise us about you? I lived in Australia for 4 months. When living in Australia, I skydived, swam in the Great Barrier Reef and went to the island where the movie "Castaway" was filmed. I also did a cross country trip across the States for 6 weeks and hiked over 100 miles on my journey.

Monday, March 15th, 2021—The project based learning students at Syracuse Academy of Science middle school celebrate math’s favorite holiday, Pi Day, with exciting games, activities and of course prizes. Students work together to solve Pi Day puzzles in an ‘escape the room’ activity, answer Pi Day trivia questions and of course Pi Day musical chairs, where you guessed it the winning prize was a pie. No matter how you slice it, this was a fun way to celebrate Pi Day.

Sunday, March 21st, 2021—This past weekend, Syracuse Academy of Science high school Atoms Yakina Sika-Amoah and Theodore Simon took home more than the gold medal and highest honors at the MOST's CNY Science and Engineering Fair, held on Sunday March 21^st.

Yakina and Theodore worked to research and develop a robot that would help clean up the coastlines. They entered the robot into the virtual CNY Science and Engineering Fair and won the following awards.

• The High Honor Medallion
• IEEE Electrical Computer Engineering Award
• Ricoh Sustainable Development Award
• US Agency for International Development Award
• Stockholm Jr. Water Prize
• Terra Science and Education Award

Not to mention, Yakina and Theodore also secured a spot and sponsorship to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in 2021!

Congratulations to Yakina and Theodore, we are all so incredibly proud of you and all your accomplishments this weekend. We look forward to you both representing not only Syracuse Academy of Science High School but the Upstate New York community at the Regneron ISEF!

Friday, March 5th, 2021—Earlier this month Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school students participated in the program, D.E.A.R., which stands for Drop Everything And Read. This fun initiative invites and encourages students to sit quietly and read a book of their choosing. It also helps instill the love of reading, while working on continuing to grow and develop reading skills. Wednesday, March 24th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science middle school will be welcoming virtual guest speaker, Ja’Dayia Kursh on Wednesday, March 24th. Ja’Dayia Kursh, also known as the ‘Classy Black Cowgirl,’ is the first Black Rodeo Queen in Arkansas’ history. She has also been featured on the Today Show, has partnered with Wrangler and is a mentor to young women around the world. Ja’Dayia will be sharing with the students about how to overcome obstacles and finding confidence within yourself. We are excited to welcome Ja’Dayia on Wednesday. This is one virtual guest speaker event you certainly don’t want to miss!

Friday, March 5th, 2021—Paint us excited as we share that earlier this month, the Syracuse Academy of Science elementary Atoms expressed their creativity in art class. The students in kindergarten and 1st grade drew beautiful self-portraits, while the Atoms in 2nd - 4th grade experimented with color creation. They discovered how to make various shades, hues and of course new colors while using the primary colors red, yellow and blue. Keep up the great work, Atoms!

Friday, March 19th, 2021—Syracuse Academy of Science high school welcomes Karl Russo for its next Senior Spotlight. This future architect shares with us in our virtual interview who inspires him the most, where he sees himself in five year, favorite memory as an Atom and much more. As we get ready to shine the ‘Senior Spotlight,’ read our interview below with high school Atom, Karl Russo.

Interview with Karl Russo

• What is one major accomplishment you had in your senior year of high school? Getting accepted to colleges I was interested in for my major.
• What are your goals for after high school? To continue on to college and become an architect.
• Name one person that inspires you? My Mom.
• What advice would you give to the next senior class? Don't let your work pile up, especially the college application process! These things get harder when you have less time. 
• Where do you see yourself in five years? I hope to be done with school completely and ready to move on to actually becoming an architect.
• If you could have dinner with any person living or dead who would they be and why? Sylvester Stallone. I have a lot of respect for him and he's one of my favorite actors.
• Name three traits that describe you? Hardworking, persistent, and responsible.
• What is your favorite hobby? Gaming.
• What is a hidden talent that no one or only a few people know about you? I know some, but not everything about video editing.
• What is your favorite memory of SAS? Congressional award trips.

Friday, March 12th, 2021—As many across the country gear up for game day, the Syracuse Academy of Science middle school Atoms had a slam dunk student activity event - Dunk-or-Treat. On Friday, March 12th the Atoms hosted a socially distant event where students had an opportunity to participate in a free throw game to win prizes, families could participate in a drive-thru trunk-or treat, and vehicles were decorated in various college and university team colors and mascots. Atoms also received candy bags and blow-up basketballs. Remote learning students received Balloon Rocket kits so they would be able to participate in STEM activities from home. Thursday, March 11th, 2021—Scoot over winter! Spring is here and so are the Syracuse Academy of Science elementary school hybrid learning Atoms! With temperatures in the upper 60s the Atoms take full-advantage of heat and enjoy a fun socially distant activity for outdoor recess … scooters! A fun time was had by all, and we are all looking forward to having the warm weather stick around for much longer.
