On Thursday, December 1st, 2016 State Senator John DeFrancisco visited the Syracuse Academy of Science Middle School. The senator has served the people of New York State with distinction for over twenty years. He has championed different causes that are important to the people of Central New York. Over his tenure, he has introduced legislation that helped to address crime, job creation, and the reduction of taxes. In addition, he is a supporter of both our school and charter schools in general as he was influential in the opening of our sister school next year, the Syracuse Academy of Science and Citizenship School. Before speaking to the students, he received a tour of the middle school as this was his first visit. With the students, he brought a message of C.A.R.E. The acronym stands for Character, Attitude, Respect, and Excellence. This message of hard work and positive attitude fits right into our mission at SAS, which is to instill these qualities so that our students have the tools they need to succeed in a very complex world. He fielded a number of questions from our students such as “What is your favorite and least favorite part of being a senator?” Students additionally quizzed him about his family, his hobbies, and even his reading interests! Two of our wonderful 5th graders presented thank you cards to the senator on behalf of the entire grade and he brought wonderful books that highlight many key details about our amazing state! Thank you Senator DeFrancisco for taking time from your schedule to support our students!

On Tuesday, November 29th, 2016 the students of the SAS Middle school hosted a special guest speaker from the SAS staff. Jontae Brown works not only as our amazing custodian at the middle school, but also proudly serves as a sergeant in the United States Marines. Sergeant Brown has served in the Marines since 2010 and has been stationed in places such as Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and Marine Corps Base Camp Smedley D. Butler in Okinawa, Japan. He spoke to our students about the history and the role of the Marine Corps in the defense of America and other nations. Students enjoyed the videos that Sergeant Brown brought to detail the boot camp experience that molds this elite force. We thank Sergeant Brown and your fellow Marines for their effort and sacrifice in preserving our freedom!

On Tuesday, November 15th, 2016, third grade went on a field trip to the YNN Studio. Students had the opportunity to see where reporters work, what kind of equipment they use, and visit the studio where weather forecasts are recorded! First, students learned about some of the history of the Syracuse area. We learned that the Erie Canal was just outside of YNN studio, where I-690 is now located! Next, we got to talk to a meteorologist who told us the ins and outs of weather forecasting. The meteorologist showed us the studio where weather forecasts are recorded and we got a chance to explore how the green screen works. Students also were thrilled to see the set and equipment that is used to create the newscasts that we see on TV. Some students even left the visit considering a career in the newscasting or meteorology field!
