Atoms Donated Toys to The Rescue Mission

Elementary Atoms collect toys and donated them to the Syracuse Rescue Mission

Wednesday, December 18, 2019Elementary Atoms rallied together to help those in need in the greater Syracuse community. A week before winter recess, students collected toys for all age groups, and donated them to the Syracuse Rescue Mission. This toy drive event was a huge success, and the Atoms felt like they were a part of something bigger! Great work, everyone.

Learning to Climb at Central Rock Syracuse

Thursday, November 21, 2019—The Adventure Cooperative for Environmental Stewardship Club, ACES, visited Central Rock Gym to practice cooperative climbing skills and move one step closer to larger outdoor adventures. ACES learned rope safety skills, knot tying, and basic belay techniques to gain confidence in slingshot toprope climbing. After demonstrating competency, students were able to climb freely with their partners or explore the bouldering routes in the gym.

Thursday, November 21, 2019High school robotics team had the privilege of welcoming guest speaker Robert Ringham, Enterprise AI Architect & Data Scientist at Avanade. Robert shared with the Atoms how AI can be used in ‘real time,’ as well as, how it can be incorporated into our daily routines.

With Robert’s diverse background he explains the variety of avenues students can explore in the robotics, science and engineering industry. Robert’s areas of concentration at Avanade include but are not limited to the following: deep learning, computer vision, natural language processing, machine learning, consulting in financial services and capital markets, retail digital development, education, travel and hospitality, oil and gas.

Wednesday, December 18, 2019Ms. Dickinson and Mr. Scheemaker’s classes serve up kindness, gratitude and appreciation just before the winter recess. Classes team up and work together to create a beautiful thank you card, sign and special treats for a team that ensures there are healthy options for them to eat, create specialty meals for those with food allergies and for always having a smile on their face - the lunch team. Great work, Atoms!

High School Robotics Team Visits the Middle School

Tuesday, December 17, 2019Known for its prestige, the high school robotics team share with the middle school Atoms how this program in particular has opened many doors for a handful of its team members. The robotics team has participated in tournaments near and far and inspired the middle school students to continue to participate and study the field of robotics. We hope to see many of our middle school (or soon to be high school) students trying out for the robotics team.

Imaginations Run Wild on Class Field Trip

Friday, December 13, 2019Elementary Atoms let their imagination run wild when on a field trip to Destiny USA’s WonderWorks Museum. A day filled with hands-on, minds-on science fun that challenged their minds as they explored the many ‘Wonder Zones’ within the museum. A couple of favorite activities include the virtual reality simulator and of course lying on a bed of nails. Thank you WonderWorks and Destiny USA for your generous hospitality. We look forward to visiting again!

NFL Legend Speaks with Middle and High School Legend

Syracuse Academy of Science middle and high school welcome motivational speaker and former NFL legend, Leroy Collins

Tuesday, November 26, 2019Former running back for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars, Leroy Collins spoke with the middle and high school on how he was able to overcome adversity and set his eye on the prize … playing football in the NFL.

Mr. Collins shares with the Atoms his incredible story of how he battled back from injuries from a tragic automobile accident which left him wheelchair bound, and becoming victorious over life’s challenges. It was with his perseverance, can-do attitude, family and friends who helped him focus on the road ahead and achieve his goal of playing in the NFL.

Lights. Camera. Story Time with Redhouse

Elementary Atoms welcome Executive Director at Redhouse Art Center, Samara Hannah who read to the students during story time

Wednesday, December 11, 2019It’s not every day that story time turns into a theatrical experience. But with the help of the Executive Director of Redhouse Art Center, Samara Hannah, she made the characters come to life. Students used their imagination and creativity when listening to the story, ‘Horton Hatches the Egg’ by Dr. Seuss. Imagination and creativity are just two elements that help make an incredible theater performance. Students were excited to learn more about theater and all that Redhouse Art Center has to offer. Thank you Samara, and Redhouse for sharing the wonderful world of theater and reading to the students.

Middle school hosted its November Student of the Month Ceremony

Friday, November 8, 2019It’s time to celebrate the middle school Atoms for all their accomplishments in the month of November. As a monthly tradition, the middle school hosts its Student of the Month Ceremony. Students are awarded certificates based on their hard work, various presentations in their specialty classes, as well as, demonstrating the monthly character strength. For the month of November, the character strength was Citizenship.

Sophomore Atoms Visit Colgate University

Sophomore Atoms visited Colgate University for a college visit

Thursday, November 7, 2019Rain or shine, sophomore Atoms visited Colgate University for a college visit. Students had the opportunity to participate in a campus tour and visit classrooms in the historic buildings, learn about campus life and of course experience first-hand the beautiful dining hall. Following the tour, Atoms attended an information session led by Associate Dean of Admissions, Erin Milin, who shared with the students information about the admission requirements, and the college history. Students also received official Colgate University swag - a t-shirt! Thank you, Colgate University for hosting the Atoms and sharing with them the history and tour of the campus.
